Q: freestanding - does this mean you can drive away and it remains in situ and weather proof?

Yes,it is essential a small stand alone tent. I’ve just returned from a week in the Scottish highlands. I got there in the dark and rain and put it up on my own in 15 minutes. I went out exploring everyday in my van and when I returned I just fastened it back on to the side of the van for the evening. I only have two issues with this awning. 1 - it is a bit tricky to line up with the van until you get used to it ( I used a pole on the ground with reflective tape on which I left there while I was out and 2 - because it hasn’t got a very high waterproof rating it had a couple of drips inside. Other than that it is very good and easy to use
