How fat a cable can fit into this plug. I have a power cable that 3 10 gauge stranded wires, and the jacket is 5/8th inch thick. Would this plug work?

I was able to fit generator cable 3 10 gauge stranded wires with 5/8" thick jacket. It was tight, but got all the copper strands in the clamps. Don't forget to remove the two clamp inserts before tighten down around cable jacket.

You need to look at the size wire you are using. Its is rated for 15 amps max.

will this device accomodate a 12/3/SO cable with out alteration?

It is rated for 15 amps, go from there so 12 gauge may work.

Solid wire not recommended reason

Stranded wire has a higher possibility of shorting with strand breakage.
