Great book, really well written in that he covers ...
Great book, really well written in that he covers a lot of dry material but makes it interesting enough to wade through till you find the fun stuff. He also covers a lot of very high end information not generally available to the public and gives readers a solid basis to ask questions and make sure they get sensible answers. The only caveat is that this book was written a good number of years ago and science/technology have made leaps and bounds in the meantime, but as I've said, this book provides the base to be able to learn more about specific subjects (eg, metallurgy or composites) and be able to make sense of the new information.

This is a grreat book by a knowledgable writer and you can't actually EDIT an Amazon review
Anyone dealing with metal should have a copy. I had a copy that I bought about 30 years ago when I was getting my BSME. I've loaned it out over the years and it has gone missing so wanted another. If you are going to design or make parts, this book covers more real life scenarios than most "academia only" professors can. This should be required reading for any new mechanical engineer.

Excellent resource for enthusiast or engineer- racing related or just to get a more thorough understanding of these materials.
Although this book's main focus is in the racing arena, it's an excellent book to have in your library if you're interested in the characteristics of metals across the board- covers different grades of aluminum & steel, and various types of heat treating. Whether you're in to high performance racing, or just high performance building materials, this is a must have.

Very informative but a bit dated.
Excellent book that is very informative. A shame it was written before the internet age.

Any racecar designer or mechanical engineering student should read this book.
Amazing book for anyone who wants to learn the engineering science that is required for racecars. I highly recommend this book for any Mechanical Engineering college student, as the it contains very practical information that was missing from my curriculum. It is a great primer on materials and manufacturing processes, and also explains how to design parts so they won't fail.

Perfect if you really want to know the details behind it...
In college times the only copy of this book in the library passed a long time in my hands. It was a pleasure, in this digital age where a lot of application make the calculations and design suggestions, to find again the true north and all the forgotten details that truly matter. How to build fast race cars that do not break. If that's your target, this is your book.
