Author's personal happenstance instances are insightful, realistic, refreshing and encouraging
The author's personal journey of instances are really refreshing and encouraging - the title really does represent the contents. I found the book unintentionally when turning up accidentally too early for an event so popped into the library and came across this - it was so good it was hard to put down and I bought one so I have it to re-read and share.

Challenging
An interesting easy read from the viewpoint of an American Christian, so not particularly relevant in UK. Some of the stories were emotionally moving and the many everyday Christian sacrifices were a challenge. Written in 2002 the world has moved ever faster since then, but the conflicts go on till Jesus returns...

Expect the unexpected.
I am a Philip Yancey fan, not because I have met him, but because every book I have read of his makes you 'think', and this one is no different. He holds your interest not only by providing incite into his subjects, but his personal experience. When one reads 'Finding God in Unexpected Places' you come away aware and looking for God in unexpected places. For a good read with lots of subjects I highly recommend this book. Gary R Patterson

nice collection of essays
One of the hardest things about reading or reviewing a book is to accept it for what it is, rather than what it isn't. If you are looking for one of Yancey's highly focused theological/apologetic works, this isn't it. If you want one of the most insightful minds in the Christian community looking at the way God is at work in the world, this book is for you.Largely culled from his back page essays at Christianity Today and revised for the post 9/11 reader, Yancey sees the unexpected places God is at work in the world. Perhaps most importantly for those of us in a pampered, consumer driven culture, he reminds us that grace is found in the hard work of being faithful when God isn't evident and when we are the counterculture. He sees large events such as 9/11, the Cold War and the fall of communism as more than political events, but places where God is doing some of His best work, because god's people are busy doing God's workl in those places.I find Yancey to be most exciting as a writer when he is able to let his mind run free to find the unexpected insight. These columns are where I think he is at his best.Highly recommend

Philip reveals how God is always there, no matter what the circumstances may look like. In his many travels and interviews, he tells about the God's presence and help in the darkest of times. As God's word has told us, He has promised to never leave us. It is a an encouraging book for anyone who is asking "Is God really here?"
