So I was able to finally use my tent, purchased over a year ago. I was able to set-up and take-down the tent by myself, but it is not easy, and absolutely takes longer than 5 mins. The stakes alone took 5-10 minutes to hammer into the ground, and yes, you need the stakes for this tent. SET UP: Lay down your tarp. (8x10 worked great) Assemble the 2 poles and drape them over the tent in the direction they should go. Then secure the two poles into the back corners of the tent. Do not attach the clips until the tent is standing. From the front of the tent, (shoes off) walk onto the tent to the center and attach the top two center clips in opposite directions. Then make your way down the poles and attach all the clips around the tent. These clips are tough! Make sure you’re clipping on the black poles and not the sliver connectors for an easier assembly. (Same with taking them off) The clips can slide over the sliver connectors for easy adjustments if needed. Assemble the front porch pole, secure in place. The rain tarp is super easy to put on. Make sure to use the underneath velcro tabs to secure the rain cover to the tent poles. I didn’t use the rain cover lead ropes this trip. They weren’t necessary imo, plus I didn’t have much more room to stake them down. OVERALL REVIEW: I really like this tent. It’s my second darkroom tent by Coleman. I love how tall it is, how much room there is, the security of the screened in porch room. It’s really nice. I call it my Taj Mahal, because it’s BIG! There are plenty of wall pockets and even a ceiling canopy if you want to use it. The top four corners and center have loops for convenient hanging of items or lights. I love how wide the tent door opens up. It’s great for getting items in quickly. But it doesn’t have a tie. You just gather it up and shove it into a mesh pocket on the inside, which was a little odd. Ugh, now for the issues. This tent is basically all mesh screen. There’s about a 3 ft base around the bottom made of tent material, but the rest is all mesh screen to the top. Doesn’t seem very strong, could rip easily with any force and makes me concerned about longevity. Once you put the rain cover on there is literally no airflow and the tent is completely blacked out. You will need lights during the day in this tent. There’s no windows to see out, except a half window in the tent door or the front screened porch. This is a horrible flaw in the design. This tent needs at least one other window in the back of the tent that could be opened/closed, for a cross breeze. Maybe if the rain cover had a zipper that could be tied opened, even from the outside that would be helpful. Or if pulling the lead ropes would create space between the tent and rain cover that would help with airflow. But the rain cover is secured too tightly to the bottom four corners of the tent. Another issue with this set up is that spiders or insects crawl up in between the two layers and you basically have to stare at them through the mesh screen. It’s very creepy, and I’ve been a tent camper for 50 yrs, bugs don’t scare me. I had a whole community of Daddy-long-legs that decided to camp around the top corners. (20+) I either had to gently coax them back down the mesh or just stare at them while I laid in bed. Thanks goodness it wasn’t something scarier! Probably the worst issue was the front triple zipper. This is a huge flaw on this tent. There is no tension at this zipper intersection and it makes it difficult to unzip or zip the tent. Why wouldn’t they have put a stake loop at this junction so it would be stacked down for better tension? I will be fixing this before next use. The frustration this cause was VERY annoying. Even stepping on it with your foot really didn’t help, because of the way it was designed it’s just too loose. I even put a bag of heavy rocks there and it didn’t help. I was lucky and didn’t have rain, but I could see why people say this tent leaks. The rain cover goes over the front porch ceiling and two windows. These areas don’t have any inside covers. So they are opened screen that water could easily roll down and into the porch if the rain cover moves in the wind and rain. Not good at all! FINAL NOTES: I do love the tent still for lots of reasons, but I will need to find solutions for the airflow, rain cover, insect gathering, front zipper and possible water leakage. I can’t return it, or maybe I would. Those are a lot of issues to solve. (Pic is without the rain cover)
