A Writer's Guide to Powerful Paragraphs

An interesting book for beginners through experienced writers
Victor C. Pellegrino has written four extremely interesting books on writing, each of which is usable by high school students through experienced writers. For aspiring writers, "A Writer's Guide to Powerful Paragraphs" provides a framework for properly learning what a paragraph is - and then proceeds to describe thirty ways to write paragraphs. Interestingly, Pellegrino's approach is equally effective for the experienced writer who simply needs a bit of a boost or reminder of what paragraphs are all about or some inspiration.Pellegrino provides a general introduction to paragraph construction (one thought per paragraph!) and then thirty short chapters on different ways to write paragraphs. In Pellegrino's own words, he provides "a short, simple and direct explanation of one type of paragraph, followed by an example, an analysis of the example, and practical suggestions for writing that type of paragraph". His own writing is extremely clear and, as odd as it may sound, refreshing. He is not t all condescending and brings a refreshing enthusiasm to his description. The book is fun reading."A Writer's Guide to Powerful Paragraphs" is useful because it gives you a short and handy reference to all the ways in which you might approach a paragraph. I cannot speak for other writers, but I know I sometimes lock myself into a single viewpoint and something like this book will snap me out of it.Pellegrino is definitely gifted. His four little books on writing belong on or near every writer's desk. I'm glad I discovered his work.Jerry

maybe helpful for beginning writers of nonfiction
Might be a few tips in here for the beginning nonfiction writer, but little helpful information for any writers of fiction or intermediate/advanced nonfiction writers - such as those who have already taken a course in writing or have experience writing. Good advice to make sure paragraphs have a topic sentence and that rest of sentences relate to this main topic to give a sense of unity and cohesion.

This is a good book and I used it only once or twice. I don't even remember reading it. Why am I saying this? Because in this day and age there is a thing called Internet and you can find everything that you need without cluttering your house with books. Some may disagree on this and even I have a library at my house but I noticed I use the internet most often. Of course, I am not getting rid of my books either. So...everyone is different. You can get this book if you are gonna use it and don't mind the extra junk piling up.

Add to your bathroom library.
When I sit in the smallest room in my house I like to read something. This book is ideal! The chapters are paragraph types, and are short, with examples that are clear and easy to understand. A book you can read a little at a time, or until your feet go asleep. A very useful guide to writing paragraphs. Worth the price with great practical, useful examples. VERY UNDERSTANDABLE
I read this book. It's a joyful reading. The text is simple, and you can comprehend the different aproaches that could be in a paragraph. The author dont apart of the point. I read another book, "writing clear paragraphs" and comparing the two,I think "writer's guide..." is the most useful for a first aproach to the point. The other book have a complex language, with complex examples, and use many pages to explain diferent aspects of gramar or sentences that is not directly attached to the theme. So, this is a great buying!!

For beginners
There are plenty of writing guides available for writers in every stage of their careers. A Writer's Guide to Powerful Paragraphs is definitely one of those how-to guides better suited for beginning writers. The author models his paragraphs the way I learned all the way back in high school. This is not to say that it's a bad thing, but it is geared more for non-fiction writing of the formal essay variety more than anything else.More than that, this book's formatting is amateurish at best. Every paragraph in the book has a space between it; no doubt put there in order tom make this little how-to book long enough to able to use perfect binding. There's really nothing new here. And for a writer looking to strengthen his/her own writing style one might be better off simply reading works from other well-known writers whose style they admire in order to learn more.

You'll write better if you follow these guidelines
Another work by Mr. Pellegrino that should be in your arsenal if you want your writing to be powerful/salable. It's written clearly making it easy to understand, making me wish that I'd had professors during my educational process that could have presented the material in such a lucid manner. I would have saved a lot of time and effort with these basics in mind.
