Anecdotal British gardner's life in Provence
An anecdotal account of the life of a British landscape gardner plus beautiful wife, small son and charming dog in Provence. The episodes are generally engaging and amusing although I found Mr Dingwall-Main's style of writing irritatingly, self-consciously facetious. The general theme of the book is around design projects in the author's and his clients' gardens. The search for solutions to water supply and land slip problems is often fascinating as well as hilarious, but the keen gardner should we warned that there is not a lot of gardening detail here. There are quite a number of charming, moody illustrations by Don Grant, Chairman of the Chelsea Arts Club.

Who could believe gardening and swimming pools could be so funny and interesting?
If anyone reads my reviews they will know I abhor comments such as Hysterically Funny which I usually find just plain hysterical and nothing funny about them at all.I picked this book up and was lucky enough to read the first three pages. I did not read the blurb "extremely funny tale" until I had bought the book.It has not disapointed. The prose is fantastic, the puns come thick and fast. I love it. Unlike Peter Mayle, Dingwall-Main makes up ludicrous names for his "clients and workers". He even apologises for his terrible puns. Msr LaBour who's Christian name turns out to be Manuel. So dreadful I had to laugh out loud. I feel sorry "a customer" who failed to see how cleverly A D-W pokes fun at himself.I am loving it and it will be one I shall recommend to others(I now find that I already had this on my bookshelf. It must have been read in my rather drunken days in France in the late 90's!!!!)

Entertaining,amusing & wonderful book.
Witty and entertaining view on living in the most wonderful place in the world. A book that takes you there within every sentence. Alex describes the area wonderfully with its characters and countryside. Although it has a gardening slant, it is enough to satisfy the enthusiast but not overwhelm the beginner. I thoroughly recommend this book to anyone remotely interested in France and its people.
