I brought this book years ago when I first started and I got it again to maybe use as a teaching tool. The music may not seem as relevant with today's seven string mayhem but this is still one off the best instruction Rock/metal books ever published. Troy is an excellent teacher and this book is well laid out. If you have a foundation in guitar playing and are thinking about exploring lead guitar I would say get this book. The music may seem dated to some ( not me ) but the techniques taught are all foundational. This is a must have in every guitarist's library I believe.

Good Book but I'd recommend it for the guitar beginner +
I have several of Troy's books and love them all. I found this book to be a step back for me in knowledge. I knew probably 85% of this material but it did show me a couple cool licks so it's worth keeping. This would be a great first step before moving on to his advanced books. I'd say a late 1st year or more likely a 2nd year guitarist may really benefit from these useful lessons. His books are easy to read and understand since he keeps it simple. Good luck!

The only books you'l ever need
The amount of material covered in part II is worth a four year degree at Temple University- I should know. It applies everything you want to know, or never knew was possible. Truly a great and informative lexicon of information. Oh...please buy part II as well. Trust me, it helps :-)

Awesome Stuff
This book rules - no other way to put it . I've been playing guitar for 5 years - no other book I've seen provides this thorough grounding in fundamental technique as applicable to metal - after a mere 2 months of serious practise ( 1 hr per day ) my playing rose by SEVERAL levels - with regard to speed / control and just plain and simple playing stuff that sounds good.Highly Recommended

Awesome starter book for any electric guitar style.
Awesome. Buy it for any style. In fact by up every instructional book in the series. Troy is an excellent teacher. Definately worth getting if your starting out. If more advanced get Lead and Rhythm 1 and 2. Get Speed Mechanics. Get Fretboard Mastery.

must buy for those wanting to learn to shred
Great book. Definitely for the intermediate player and teaches all the awesome tricks like squeals and has lots of challenging exercises. Comes with a cd, wish it was a DVD but it works just fine as a cd to practice with

Good tutorial spoilt by the audio
As a guitarist Mr Stetina is without doubt a talented man, and his book, Metal Lead Guitar Volume 1 is certainly a worthwhile introduction to the subject for the person already with a little experience of playing the guitar, I would suggest. I have no complaints so far in regards to the quality of the tuition, but I do have several gripes in regards to the audio which accompanies it. First, it no longer comes with a CD, but rather as a download. I don't have any real problem with this in itself, but I do wonder whether the original disc was free of the things I find niggling me. First, the sound is so drum and bass heavy it gets in the way of the very lead guitar you want to hear and learn, and it isn't helped by what I consider a little over the top with the distortion. And it isn't helped much by bunging it onto CD to play on your CD player. This all gets a bit tiring after hearing it a few times. Yes, it might be metal but for clarity toning it down a little might have helped. Second, for the individual riffs there is no metronome keeping time. Thirdly, and for me worst of all, is the very peculiar arrangement for the solos. Take solo 1: 12 bars of introduction which you want to skip, then the 19 bars for the solo itself, then strangely and irritatingly, another 6 bars of the intro before the solo starts again, minus the lead guitar, so you can play along with the backing. Why not just have the solo, with a brief intro, and the same thing minus the lead guitar as the next track? To be honest the audio is a bit of a mess unfortunately, and whilst on the cover it says newly revised and updated that clearly doesn't refer to the sound quality.

Not for the absolute beginner, but a very good book.
I have several of Troy's books and they are all very impressive. Having read through the book I realise that it's a little advanced for me at this point. I am currently working through his Metal Rhythm Guitar Vol. 1 which is an excellent introduction to playing electric guitar. The explanations are very clear and there is very good integration of theory and practice. You won't go far wrong using Troy's books. Get hold of this book by all means but if you're a beginner start off with his Metal Rhythm Guitar Vol. 1.

Great book
This is a great book on metal lead playing. It introduces a lot of different techniques and gives you plenty of exercises that you can use in an actual musical context. One piece of advice: unless you're already a half-way confident lead player in terms of speed, buy the Lead Guitar Primer. Otherwise, while you may get past the first song, the second one shoots up in difficulty dramatically, and you'll have to have a lot of practice to master it (i got stuck on it for a month).

The very Best Tutorial for Heavy Metal
As a 75 year old who had a Stratacaster given as a birthday presents this book has been of considerable benefit (I did play Bass in the 60s) The book just works so well, but you do need a background in playing and music to get the best from it. I have mastered the book in less than 2 months.
