Demi Moore is incredible ! The story line pulls you in, & you can't turn away. The last 10 minutes were over the top, but the final scene says it all. Highly recommended !

Frightening and truly scary. Great special effects with a storyline about an aging beauty willing to do anything to attain her youthful self with twisted and horrific consequences. I couldn’t interrupt viewing and sat through it at one sitting

I got this movie and I love quirky weird horror movies. My favorite kind of horror movies are the disturbing ones . This one was right up my alley. It's extremely gory, enough to make your stomach turn, and has tons of nudity. The acting in this is incredible both from Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley and how much of an a hole of Dennis Quaid's acting as well. It is supposed to be a gory horror movie to make you queasy, but I actually saw it as a dark comedy kind of. I just found it humorous because of the narcissism of what a Top Model could be like, not to say that all models are narcissists, but this definitely shows ugly side of it. The 4K quality on this movie is incredible (I believe it is presented in Dolby vision) even on a crappy second gen 4K TV. The sound is really nice, I believe it's DTS-HD for DTS:X, I'm not 100% sure. So I'm extremely happy that I bought this and I would definitely watch it several times in the future.

This movie was a lot of fun. It was just different enough to be very entertaining. A little gruesome at times, too.

The Substance is easily one of — if not number one of — my favorite films of 2024. Like most horror movies, it uses dark context to illuminate some truths about the world around us. If you’re purchasing this movie, it’s likely you are already a fan. To that end, this is a slightly disappointing disc. While I am glad I have a copy of this movie in my hands, I certainly wish MUBI would have put a little more thought and time into special features. The studio released a 30 minute long behind-the-scenes featurette to YouTube, but that is not saved for posterity here. Technically, a great disc, but hopefully will get the special edition treatment with more love somewhere down the road.

This movie is hard to recommend if I don't know you....hell it is hard to say you'd be on board with everything if I did know you. There are so many levels at work here I don't know where to begin. I won't recap the story except to say that this is a sci-fi body horror film with amazing direction, acting and a message you have heard before but not felt this strongly coming through. I never thought much of Demi more than a capable actress. She is uncanny in this. Dennis Quaid (subbing for Ray Liotta who passed before they could film this) plays his second most despicable character of the year. After seeing this at the theater twice, a rarity for me, I purchased the director's first film which is about the equivalent to Quentin's leap between Reservoir and Pulp. Speaking of direction....Fargeat copies (borrows?...pays homage?) to not only Cronenberg, Kubrick, Lynch and Carpenter but Brian Yuzna and early Peter Jackson. The one caveat I will give audiences is that the final act of the film goes over the top and may take some viewers out of the story. It didn't for me but I get it. I found the film genius.

Awful overall. The first third of the move is actually well done and engaging. The middle third is rather lackluster. The final third is a seemingly never ending stream of tacky and poorly done gore. Honestly, they could have ended the movie at the 2/3 mark and called it good. Less would have been more. As it was another reviewer here said they threw the movie away rather than keep it in their collection. I understand the sentiment. Don’t buy. If someone gives it to you, think twice.

This is my second viewing of this cinematic masterpiece of a horror film that paid homage to multiple horror movies in the last decade! This is a mixed bag of many classic horror genres. The acting performances are strong coming from Demi Moore and this could probably be her magnum opus. Margret Qualley was a dynamite and her intense performance is electrifying! The final act was a little over the top but that was the point to make the audience sick with disgust! This a movie that will stick with you for a long time! Vanity insanity! This movie comprises beautiful eye candy scenes and ugly horrifying scenes that will last you a long time! This set came with barebone extras. Only one 5 minutes featurette. There are 30 minutes of making of the film exist in the wild and is free to watch on YouTube. That could have been included in the set along with interviews that too existed but not included in the set! For the price alone. We are getting just the film with zero barebone extras… A little disappointed…

As a longtime fan of 80s cult horror, I was floored by how perfectly this film captures the spirit of the genre—while injecting a fresh dose of savage social commentary. Visually, it's stunning—slick practical effects and grimy retro aesthetics. But beneath the body horror is a biting satire about beauty, fame, and the cost of reinvention. It skewers societal expectations without ever losing its nasty sense of fun. The Blu-ray transfer is excellent: crisp, vibrant, and packed with detail that really does justice to the film’s tactile, often intense visuals. If you appreciate clever genre filmmaking with something to say—and you're not afraid to squirm—this belongs in your collection. Absolutely one of the boldest and most memorable horror films in years. A future cult classic in the making.

Esta película, a mi parecer, si entra en la categoría de "clásico de culto". Si bien no es para todos, recomiendo que la vean por lo menos una vez en la vida. La directora, cuidó mucho cada cuadro de la película, resultando en una gran fotografía, algunos cuadros parecen sacados de un manga. Tiene una de las mejores actuaciones de Demi Moore y claro de Margaret Qualley. Entre otras varias reflexiones profundas, tiene un potente mensaje contra la adoración a la juventud y belleza, que tanto en la realidad como en la película, raya en lo absurdo. Hace referencia en algunas escenas a varias otras películas de terror y el soundtrack es perfecto! Esta versión blu-ray y 4k tiene doblaje español latino (que no recomiendo para nada) y el audio original en inglés que es el mejor. Contiene dos discos, el blu-ray con la cara de Elisabeth y el 4k con la cara de Sue (otro detallazo en esta versión física). La imagen en ambos es inmejorable. Edición recomendada 100%.
