A tough, good value storage expansion solution.
A very impressive product. The MSI DATAMAG is small enough to be easy to carry around, but solidly built - it gives the impression that it will last and give years of reliable service. The storage on my Surface Laptop was beginning to fill up, and I was faced with the prospect of dismantling it to install a larger SSD. I researched the MSI DATAMAGs and decided to give one a try. Crystal Disk Mark is showing performance of well over 1,000 MB/s - not as good as the internal disk, but plenty fast enough for my purposes which are software development. It really is plug-and-play - I connected it with one of the supplied cables and it came up working immediately. The only disappointment has been that it is not compatible with ReFS which I generally use on my development drives. But it's running fine with NTFS and performance is good. The MagSafe rings are also useful - I generally use my laptop on a laptop tray, and other external disks tend to fall off. With the DATAMAG, I can stick one of the rings onto the corner of the tray and the little drive sticks to it. With the current price rises for storage devices, this is looking competitive at the £150 I paid. Prices are fluctuating a lot as AI data centres soak up all production of semiconductors, so you need to shop around a bit.

Worth it -
Very quick drive. Very reliable. I use it mainly to edit video direct from the harddrive. Also has its uses with the MagSafe for recording directly from the iPhone. If you dont plan to use the MagSafe capability then I could recomend finding a normal drive you would probably get more space for a similar price.

High quality build
Feels quality, fast enough for your iPhone open get open gate raw recordings with the added benefit of magsafe. I really hope this is a category MSI stays committed to because I'll likely be buying again at some point. What would be super nice is if they added a faster drive and thunderbolt support but I understand the price would skyrocket and it'd be an even more niche group of users even wanting it. The rings they included to stick to non-magsafe products is a nice touch but I can't see myself using them personally. Tested on iPhone 17 Pro Max and M4 Max Macbook Pro
