This is fresh, good quality loose herb. Resealable paper bag provides clear date of manufacture and expiration, as well as source, which I appreciate. Haritaki is one of the three herbs that make up the more commonly known Triphala, used for bowel health. This is more of a tonifier and a detoxifier, not a harsh stimulant laxative like senna or cascara Sagrada. The bag suggests 3-5 grams twice daily and while this dose is very healthy for cleansing, etc, it wont necessarily clean you out. The bag is 100 grams, providing a minimum of 10 days worth of product. The major con to this type of herb is that it really has to be encapsulated for you to be able to get it down. If you make a tea with it, I guarantee you will find it nearly impossible to swallow without choking or worse. This is an extremely astringent herb that will pucker the inside of your mouth very, very badly to the point you will be unable to swallow. Think unripe persimmon and you're close to the effect you'll have taking this by the spoonful. That said, you must be ready to sit down with a lot of empty vitamin capsules and encapsulate a handful for each dose which takes time and is messy. A 3-5 gram dose will fill about 5-8 medium sized capsules. Then you have to swallow those 5 to 8 capsules in one go. And then repeat again later in the day. Not the most pleasant or convenient procedure. None of that lowers the rating and quality of this product. I just feel consumers should be aware of the labor- and time-intensive nature of buying this little bag of potent herbs.

I wrote on the back of the bag what the uses for this powder are, and how to mix it up in hot water. Put about 1/4 - 1/2 teaspoon in hot (not boiling water) let it cool and drink it down. It tastes awful. It can be sweetened with a little bit of honey if necessary. It's supposed to be good for gastrointestinal health, weight lose, is an anti-oxidant and anti-bacterial, lowers blood sugar levels, increases insulin sensitivity and is often used to treat mouth ulcers and gum disease. It should not be taken during pregnancy. If you take too much it can make you poop a lot. As far as I can tell, this powdered Haritaki is very finely powdered and is good quality.
