Hanger, Volume 1

Future Police Yaoi
I really enjoyed all 3 of these manga currently available. There's a bit of a tech/horror/romance/suspense going on that I wouldn't have thought I'd enjoy, but I couldn't put it down. Love the chemistry between the two main characters.

Heavy on plot, light on romance...so far.
I saw the pretty art and bought this manga expecting to see bishounen with just enough hint of flirtation to spark my imagination (like "Free"). What I didn't realize is that it actually is the BL genre (per the stamp on the back cover) and there was even a brief smut scene, which was surprising considering there's no "explicit" parental advisory and the manga wasn't plastic-sealed.On the whole I thought this manga was good. The characters have unique personalities and individual abilities that get more interesting as the story evolves and more of their facets are revealed. I will say that I typically prefer yaoi with 25% plot and 75% romance, and this was more like 90% action and fight scenes and 10% romantic potential. The main character is a rookie cop, freshly assigned to work with a "Hanger," a drug-addicted criminal. These partnerships are common on the police force. Drugs in this world infuse humans with special powers (super strength, the ability to heal others, etc.), so not only are Hangers physically superior to most humans, but they also have knowledge of other criminals and their activities. So they trade their help in catching other drug-addicted crooks for reduced sentences. Most of them have hundreds of years to spend in custody, so they work hard to try and have some kind of life outside of prison some day. The cops (or "Keepers") they partner with sort of "control" them with a bracelet called a "lock." If the Hanger gets too far away from his or her Keeper, they will be incapacitated (or killed?) by the device. So it is in the criminal Hangers' best interests to play nice and work companionably with their cop Keepers. For me, the main character tends to fade into the background. He's a cookie-cut figure, a rookie cop who doesn't know anything about anything and therefore has to be mentored and is often teased by everyone around him. He doesn't have a lot of his own personality as of yet. His Hanger, on the other hand, is very mysterious. He has no memories prior to his arrest, though the reason for that is not explained in volume 1 of the manga. (And for some reason I am suspicious as to whether he even has amnesia or if he's lying about it, because he always gets quiet when someone mentions it...) It's kind of adorable that he fights off his addiction cravings with food, because he's always hungry and likes for the rookie to prepare his meals. Which is about the only "romantic" thing going on between them at this point.Halfway through volume 1, a second Hanger/Keeper couple is introduced. Sometimes I found them annoying, but they grew on me. The Hanger is a major flirt. His Keeper is the nerdy, rude genius type. I kind of have a thing for those standoffish characters with glasses who condescend to everyone around them. lol They are an actual couple and have had feelings for each other since they were in college together, before things went south and one of them turned to a life of crime. They are the more interesting couple, all things considered, and they're the ones that have a love scene in this volume, because this Hanger has to control his drug cravings with sex.All in all, an interesting setup. Like I said, I prefer a lot more romance than this volume delivered, but the world is complex and required a lot of building and explanation up to now. I'm hoping the story heats up in the next couple of volumes. I can forgive a slow start when the storytelling is as rewarding as this one, and the manga felt really long and took me three sittings to finish reading. It doesn't feel like an info-dump, though, because everything is shown, not just told, to the reader. You get your money's worth.

Wow
Hanger was better than I thought it would be. It sounds like Hajime has something to do with something. I look forward to the next volume and to learn more about Hajime and Zeroichi.

Love this new BL series!!
Not so sure why others are being so tough in their reviews, but I LOVE this new series!!! Between the characters and the overall story plot, it is action packed and refreshing compared to other BL series. I also loved the supernatural aspect. So as someone who loves BL manga, this is definitely a great one to add to your collection! I can't wait for the next volume to be released!
