Originally from Vienna, Richard Neutra came to America early in his career, settling in California. His influence on postwar architecture is undisputed , the sunny climate and rich landscape being particularly suited to his cool, sleek modern style. Neutra had a keen appreciation for the relationship between people and nature; his trademark plate glass walls and ceilings which turn into deep overhangs have the effect of connecting the indoors with the outdoors. His ability to incorporate technology, aesthetics, science, and nature into his designs brought him to the forefront of Modernist architecture. In this volume, all of Neutra’s works (nearly 300 private homes, schools, and public buildings) are gathered together, illustrated by over 1,000 photographs , including those of Julius Shulman and other prominent photographers. Review: Incredible quality monographs of the complete works of Richard Neutra - With incredible photographs, including those of the maestro Julius Shulman, and also with rich architectural drawings this is a wonderful book. The graphics are rich with subdued colors and clearly delineated plans illustrated in black ink. It is a large book and some criticize this because it is multilingual in it's text. I did not find this relevant to the experience of holding a chronicle of the complete works of this brilliant and important architect. It is a book to be treated with reverence while browsing its rich pages so its size and weight are a minor inconvenience. Review: Richard Neutra monograph - Best book on Neutra available. Very comprehensive in scope and contains many wonderful color photos.

Architectural Art
This book is awesome for a fan of 20th century architectural design. Even if you just enjoy good design, you'd appreciate the history and the photographs of this great master's work. The fact that the book is so oversized is a conversation piece in itself reflecting the treasure it holds inside. The cover is made out of actual hardwood, the text is written in English, German and French and most all the photographs are black and white. A true treasure for any collector.

Great coverage, not pleased with the Taschen layout
This book does a nice job laying out Neutra's houses over the years. The pictures could have been a little bigger, but I am not going to pick on that point. It is pretty complete in its breadth. What gets this volume only a 4 star review is the fact that Taschen chose to save money and instead of putting out three different volumes, (one English , one German, one French), they chose to put all three together in one volume! So what you have is a history which could have probably fit into half the amount of pages (and this is a monster volume) but instead is the size it is largely because there are 3 different accompanying texts for each and every building and house in the book. So imagine having a nice picture of one of Neutra's houses and then an English text describing it and then on the following page, two more texts in each accompanying language. This happens throughout the book and because of it I have taken out a star. I wish they would have pointed out this fact before I bought it. On the other hand, if you don't have this book and are a Neutra fan, you should probably buy it.

Big is beautiful
If you like your books big and heavy, then this book will please you. It is definitely the biggest I've ever bought and putting it on a bookshelf is impossible. But what can you say about its contents. Thorough and complete. To have all of ones work in one book is ambitious, but when done properly, the result is a book which makes all others on the topic redundant. All of Neutra's projects are covered in this book in chronological order. From this you gain a greater perspective of his work, rather than the usual texts which show a few of his greatest hits and always leave you wanting more. One thing you gain from this book is how over a period of 40 or so years Neutra's basic design changed very little, yet was still appropriate to its time and setting. This book is a must have. Just watch your back, it is heavy!!

Wonderful. The definitive work.
Appears to be the absolute definitive work, which is just what it's name says it is. Large format with a rather silly wood cover, it's a monster but if you are a fan of Neutra's work, this is a must have.

A Surprisingly Disappointing Book
I love modernist architecture, and I have found that the stories about the most famous houses are fascinating. Modernist houses were built for an interesting cross-section of America--not just the rich. So, it was with great anticipation that I ordered this book, widely acknowledged as the definitive Neutra volume. Here's the rub: it's printed in the three languages (English, French, and German). This book would probably be 30% shorter if it was an English-only version. The larger issue, however, is that this book suffers from a typical problem of books intended for reference: in the authors' drive to include everything, it covers almost nothing. Most houses in this book get a couple of paragraphs--maybe 4 or 5 at the most. The photography is mostly original from the period, which is great, but there's not much of it per house. Thus, it's very hard to get a feel for any particular house in this book because each one is covered so perfunctorily. You get to see front, pool, and perhaps the kitchen and a bedroom. Maybe a living room shot, too. Most are small. I would have liked to see the authors lavish some space on at least a few interesting or significant works--perhaps 4-6 pages for these, with more/larger color photos. As it is now, it's more like a architectural photography book (ooh, interesting shot!) than a book of Neutra houses. It reads like a card catalog of Neutra houses with minor factoids doodled in the margins.

Only one thing wrong...
I had previously seen this out of print book with a $200 price tag and a real wood cover. When I saw it on amazon again, I got very excited. However, the cover is not wood - it's a faux paper finish. But hey, even Richard Neutra was all for painting wood silver to look like metal. This is a great book, filled with excellent photography, interesting history on the man and the projects, and decent enough drawings (if I remember correctly). A real steal at this price and easily the best book on the man and his work.

Another amazing "Complete Works" by Taschen
Another amazing "Complete Works" by Taschen Richard Neutra's works are listed in chronological order according to the year in which they were completed. Chapels, houses, hotels, school buildings, planetaria and the US embassy in Pakistan, each architectural marvel is described with a floor plan, some B&W photos and a rare color photo (about 1 in 10 photos is color). My personal favourites are; USA - the 1947 Edgar Kaufman in Palm Springs Europe - the 1961 Rang house in Konigstein - Germany. There's an appendix listing all the houses and maps of Europe and the USA with the locations of the buildings described in the book. An epilogue by photographer Julius Shulman completes this definitive book on one of the masters of Modernism... Hopefully Taschen is planning a similar work on John Lautner Philip Corneille Belgium - Croatia

Teeny-Weeny Tiny Text Size - Warning EYE STRAIN likely!
The text size is extremely small. A typesetting failure resulting in tiny microscopic minuscule dwarfish puny undersized unreadable text. Better to release an English only edition with easy to read normal size text so that the comprehensive content can be enjoyed. Other language editions should be released separately. Unfortunately the book is unreadable and only good for flicking through the pictures.
