Jewelry: The Body Transformed

This book is incredible. The images are large and crisp. The selection of work is wide, with many images of historical pieces from all eras and origins, as well as contemporary pieces that speak to their predecessors. I love the essays- they are easy to read and offer a thoughtful look into the conversations had within the field of jewelry today. This is one of the best catalogues of jewelry over time you could get today. I keep coming back to how inclusive it is compared to other texts, and that in itself makes it worth a read. This is a great jumping off point if you wish to learn more about jewelry in any particular region or time, past or present.

Catalogue accompanying the current exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Superb illustrations of many magnificent objects from the permanent collection together with informative essays by curators spanning seven departments of the museum. Not your typical book of bling but, instead, an international selection of jewelry that reveals stories and myths and has different significance in world cultures over many historical eras. The organization of the objects is as follows: The Divine Body, The Regal Body, The Transcendent Body, The Alluring Body and The Resplendent Body.

Fine accompaniment to the Met Museum's big jewelry show, with good images of jewelry pieces mostly from their collection. So most of the jewelry is historic in nature, made before 1990, and some very old or ancient. Haven't read the text yet but lots of eye candy to enjoy first. Wish the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, with it's excellent collection, would do the same!
