Fabulous Pictures
In my opinion, this is one of the finest cameras that Canon produce. Finer even than many of their low to mid range DSLRs. This the SX740HS and the 730 I bought for my wife some years ago is just as good. It is well-made and robust, not cheap but worth every penny. The 40 times zoom is spectacular. Mega distance shots look like they are a short distance away with remarkable clarity, focus and colour density, providing the light is good and you can hold the camera steady, The IS helps on full zoom but for best result a tripod or simply standing the camera on a fence post works best. There are a host of options for shooting ranging from full manual operation to a huge selection of auto settings including low light and moving subjects. The movie setting is full HD and wonderfully clear and smooth. Honestly, I got rid of my DSLR for this and don't regret it for a single moment. The results are infinitely better. I just hope that Canon don't retire this model but keep on improving it. Buy this camera and you wont regret it.

Great compact for everyday use.
Love this camera. We have some great local walks in woods and by the river with frequent sightings of various wildlife. I could never get any decent shots on my phone as subjects were too far away and I rarely carried my bridge camera with 30x zoom as it was too bulky for everyday use. I am delighted with the Canon powershot sx740hs as it provides a semi serious camera with a powerful zoom and pops right in my trouser pocket. I read somewhere that the best way to get good photos is to have your camera on you and use it frequently. I am now able to take it every time I go out. I'm impressed by the 40x zoom which even hand held provides decent results due to the image stabilisation. I'm a casual photographer (definitely not pro and a still a good few steps down from decent amateur) but this camera lets me step out of the full auto mode as a starting point. It isn't as versatile as my bridge with regard to settings and can't take filters but it allows me to carry a camera every day which is great. It will be so easy to pack for holidays and hillwalking too, although the lack of weather proofing is a bit of a set back in the hills (I just keep it in a zip lock good bag if rain is forecast and wouldn't have it out to shoot in the wet anyway). Great compact camera for the price. Battery life is okay so far although my bridge camera takes AA batteries which would have been nice as it is easy to carry spared of those. An actual Canon spare battery is a bit too expensive. I've added some shots (most taken at full zoom) none of which I would have got with my phone and as for my bridge, well I'd have probably left that at home 😉🙂.

Great but...
The camera is great with a fantastic zoom range. Disappointed that it is supplied only with a European 2 pin plug for the charger. This necessitated buying an adapter for a UK 3 pin.

One of the best
I took the plunge & bought this camera & I am over the moon with it. I have an old Canon powershot camera & it takes great photos. But I thought I could go one better & I scored. My old Canon takes sharp photos but this one takes even sharper photos & both are 20 M Pixles. Plus i love a camera that you can put in your pocket & this one fits the bill. I am very happy as to how sharp the photos are & rich colors. I definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a camera that takes fab photos & put in your pocket. Great camera just go for it.

Very disappointed as camera is for Japan market only and has no UK Warranty
Returning right away as camera is for Japan market only and has no UK warranty, came with no instructions, the charger is 2 pin and does not fit the 3 pin uk plug supplied.

To the Moon & back
This is a popular camera & it can foto the moon but the file size is about 3MB or less. Much bigger files in wide-angle shots.

Best Compact camera
I have this camera already, and knew they weren’t making it anymore, so when I had the chance to buy another, took it. The camera is easy to use, I don’t want a bridge camera, they are too bulky, this camera fits in my pocket, the 40 x digital zoom gives me chance to get the pictures I wouldn’t with my mobile phone.

Really disappointed with video time restrictions!!
I purchased this camera as an upgrade from my Canon PowerShot SX720 as I love the great zoom on these camera's, the only letdown is the video recording restriction, I video some concert's and was shocked when I 1st used it at a recent concert when all of a sudden it stopped recording at 29 minutes 59 seconds, I've since learned that it's built into the camera to stop before 30 minute recording for tax reasons as it would be classed as a camcorder if it recorded more, when I realised it had stopped recording (totally didn't expect this) I had to restart the camera every 29 minutes 59 seconds in video record mode, I've searched online to see if this time limit can be changed but I've read that, Quote "the 29 minutes 59 seconds is hard-coded into the camera and cannot be worked around. It's literally baked into the silicon" Unquote, I gave a 3 star review as I love the zoom on this camera, other than this problem the camera is ok, if you're recording less than 30 minute video its fine but not for concert's which are much longer than 30 minutes!! Really very disappointed about the restrictions, had I known about the time limit when in video mode I might have had second thoughts about purchasing the camera, Also the camera isn't from Canon UK, it in fact came from Austria, I thought when purchasing it was Canon UK..Not to say there's anything wrong with Canon in Austria (maybe that's why there's restrictions coming from an EU country?) although if anything went wrong with the camera I think it's possible to send it to Canon UK, if anyone knows different about changing the video time limit I'd really appreciate hearing about it, but I guess only people who've bought the camera can only leave reviews so I guess I'll never know!
