Hi can this be used alone?

Hi there In short, I wouldn't recommend it! It isn't very reliable for preventing pregnancy, and aside from that it also it makes sex very sticky and uncomfortable. I ended up ditching this and the diaphragm I bought to go with it. Instead I downloaded the kindara app, bought a BBT thermometer and bought the book "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" by Tony Weschler, to learn how to track my temperature and cervical mucus changes to determine when I am fertile. This is called the symptothermal method of fertility awareness and when done correctly and consistently has the same efficacy as the contraceptive pill. There are lots of studies on it. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12309198 ((This is NOT the "rhythm method" where you just count days)). This symptothermal FAM has worked for my boyfriend and I for 3 years now, 0 pregnancies and we are both in our early 20s and very fertile. I know this is a bit more info than you asked for but if you are looking for hormone free birth control I hope this helps!

This may be a daft question but can a little of this be used like normal lubricant?

Hi, yes it can. It's not optimised as a lubricant but being a gel it does indeed have lubricating properties. Note that ContraGel shouldn't be used on it's own as a contraceptive, but with a barrier, however if you just want to use it as a lube which is a bit 'safer' then no problem.

So is this actually a spermicide or just an alternative? Less effective than normal spermicide?

It’s a natural alternative to spermicide It doesn’t contain Nonoxynol 9 which traditional spermicides do which can cause irritations “down there”
