Q: If it doesn't turn on, can it be fixed? if i unscrew the bottom and open it up to figure it out, what should i be looking for and how might i fix it?

It can be, if it just doesnt turn on though have you done basic trouble shooting? Is it getting power? If you know its getting power i would check the connections to the stirring device and make sure you dont have a loose wire, then I would check the wiring and the rheostat to make sure you are getting power where you need it.

Q: Is the unit also a hotplate?
