The best sounding Rod on CD
This is an excellent summary of Stewart's hit-making career from 1970-1989, first issued in the United Kingdom. Of course, it doesn't have the sheer scope of the 4CD box set, "Storyteller", but it pretty well captures "Rod as singles artist".If Stewart has never made an album as consistent and outstanding as "Every Picture Tells A Story", his career since then is not the artistic washout that some critics, such as Greil Marcus, would suggest.Listening to this CD, you will here gem after gem. Stewart's breakthrough hit, "Maggie May", still sounds wonderfully fresh. And for all the brassiness of his public image, it is the compassion and understatement of Stewart's singing on the likes of "The First Cut Is the Deepest", "The Killing of Georgie", "I Don't Want To Talk About It", and "Young Turks" that mark him out as a very special performer. This CD probably has the best audio of any Rod Stewart album on CD. Having recently compared tracks from this compilation (released in 1989) with the new Warner Remaster version of "A Night On The Town", it sounds like the tracks on this CD have been digitally remixed from the original multitrack tapes. Stewart's vocals on this CD have a wonderful warmth and clarity that is missing from the Warner Remaster, and even from the "Storyteller" compilation. The vocal on the original album mix of "The First Cut Is The Deepest" (used on the Warner Remaster and "Storyteller") sounds murky, as if it was obtained from a second-generation tape. The mix on "The Best of Rod Stewart" is revelatory, capturing the unique timbre of his voice. The one key drawback of this CD is that it uses the edited single versions of the songs, rather than the full-album versions. This is a shame in relation to tracks like "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?", "I Was Only Joking" and "Young Turks". And one can also quibble about the absence of great tracks like "People Get Ready" with Jeff Beck. But for me, this CD and "Every Picture Tells A Story" are the two essential Rod Stewart albums.
