Kimberly Brubaker Bradley is the best!!
Kimberly Brubaker Bradley did it again. This was not my favorite book she has written because it was pretty slow, but we still really liked it. Her other books are just SOOOOO great, that it's hard to compete with them. We loved the historical value of this story and as always the book was very entertaining. I do recommend reading it.

Growing Up Fast in Secrecy
A suspenseful historical MG read set in France in 1942 as the German Nazis expand their push into France. Twelve-year-old Miriam is suddenly faced with a life and death situation when word spreads that the Nazis intend to roundup all the Jewish people in her neighborhood. After going to visit the baker for necessary food, Miri returns to her home only to find soldiers inside their apartment searching. Her mother is nowhere in sight and then she hears what sounds like a gunshot. In all of the confusion and activity, Miri slips away unoticed with their neighbor's child, two-year-old, Nora. A nun provides them temporary shelter until she can come up with a plan to get Miri and Nora transportation to safety. Miri gets separated from Nora and ends up in a Catholic boarding school. Her ultimate goal is to find Nora and get to Switzerland, hoping that her parents are still alive and will eventually find her.Knowing who to trust is especially diificult because some French are loyal to the Nazis and could turn Mira over to them. She doesn't tell anyone that she is Jewish, but one of the nuns figures this out and asks for Mira's help in the resistance in a smuggling operation. That seemed a stretch of the imagination, but I accepted it.While I thought Kimberly Brubaker Bradley's novel was filled with tension and suspense, I was disappointed in the author's choice to include a paranormal element. This seemed unnecessary and distracting to the overall plot which was stronger without this element.

A gripping and emotional story
This WWII MG historical novel is told from the POV of Miriam “Miri”, a twelve-year-old Jewish girl. In 1942 Miri is saved from a roundup in Paris that takes her entire Jewish neighborhood. Miri doesn’t know if her parents are alive or dead. She ends up at a Catholic school for girls in the French countryside in occupied France. There she is safe from capture - as long as she pretends to be Marie, a Catholic girl. One night, one of the nuns asks her to undertake a risky and dangerous task – one that involves the castle grounds next door, its bridge, and the border to freedom. This is Miri’s chance to escape and find her parents. Will she take it?A gripping and emotional story set in one of the most turbulent and dangerous periods in history. A thoughtful and compelling addition to the WWII genre for young readers.
