A Highly Strategic Experience
If you like short, simple games then Food Chain Magnate is not for you. It's playing time is suggested at 2-4 hours and I would say your first game is likely to be towards the higher end of that range. Having said that, the experience of playing means that you don't really notice time going by. In general most things that happen are simultaneous and so the downtime waiting for others is minimal and since everything they do can affect you in major ways (even unintentionally) you are always keeping in touch with other players' actions. At the beginning of the game you have a restaurant on the board and a CEO and that is it. No player starts any differently from any other player. On your first turn you can only recruit one employee and this is where restaurant business begins to vary since the choices made on that first turn are likely to give you milestone cards early on that will give you bonuses that others do not have (unless they made the same choices). These milestones make your restaurant and game-play unique. Choices could be: do you recruit a recruiter and therefore on following turns grow your company faster than others, or do you recruit a waitress and therefore start generating income, or a Kitchen Trainee to produce food or an Errand Boy to start gathering drinks, or a marketing manager to generate demand, or a trainee executive to enable you to expand your company structure. Each choice will give you advantages that make your game play unique. The game is played in two phases, the first dictated by the number of players and the second by the choices the players made at the beginning of the game as to how long the game should last. And then you play until the money runs out. The components are good, even down to the paper money (though like most hard-core games I suspect I will use poker chips in the future in preference). What is missing is zip lock bags or some kind of reasonable storage system to hold the myriad cards necessary for the game. If you like involved board games, you will like Food Chain Magnate.
