Fantastic RPG, with a few NON FATAL flaws.
Currently I am in my 100th hour. Most of my time has been gaining strength within the Grimoire as I have just welcomed Excella into the fold after the explosion apparently killed the 3 spears as well as Beatrice. Playing the 1st playthrough has been a treat. While the game is massive, there are two things I have seen complaints about.INCESSANT TRAVEL OVER SAME TERRAIN: I concur. This game would have been one of the absolute best if the various camps actually were villages. Making one kingdom village as the centerpoint really brings this game down.BATTLE FRAME DROPS: The use of a Tales Of: battle system dramatically slows the battles down when using magic by the AI friends who make the game so endearing. The armed warfare with Sonya is crisp and fast, but the other ladies I have made equal levelled fighters use magic often, and to see my PS4 choking on a PS3 game is very sad indeed. Despite all that, the game is fun and long and with a literal TON of quests that are never-ending, and the aforementioned amazing Grimoire- with the player setting the stage with participating battles chosen by collecting sigils and even buying the most powerful ones; allows for dramatic levelling and beasts I simply don't care to face in my lengthy walk-sessions with my bikini-clad voluptuous maidens. The 5 stars are for the fact this game because it simply slices and dices the Final Fantasy library after FF 10 (10-2 is serious eye-candy!) and 11 and 13 (All 3) and 15's horrid nightmarish scenarios. However, this game lags behind (literally) the Dragon Heroes games on the PS4 as well as the TALES OF: Series after that series jumped to the PS4. Although "Shining Resonance" has it's flaws, the voiceovers/characters/ amazing art/dragons really keep it afloat in a market of Japanese RPG's saturated with the dreadful language barriers and far-more-difficult game logistics and parameters. Grab this if you like more traditional belly-busting chick babe anime-dolls RPG's bouncing all over the screen. It's not as bouncy as the Hyperdimension: Neptunia games, but is far more realistic and powerful in it's presentation. I await the conclusion and the Refrain playthrough. Nice job Sega.

Nothing More or Less Than a Solid JRPG
If you're looking for an awe-inspiring spectacle, or something truly innovative and groundbreaking you will be sorely disappointed. But if you're sick of "live services" and loot boxes, and just want a solid story-driven ARPG then you've come to the right place. To get the worst criticism out of the way: you can FEEL the cheapness oozing out this game. It feels more at home on the Vita than it does in the PS4 with cutscenes presented with static characters flapping their mouths on top of 2D backgrounds with actual animated cinematics few and far between. Textures are poor with enemies in particular looking like they've been dredged from a no-name MMO and lighting is a strange variant of cel shading, though there is thankfully very little clipping. The story also leaves something to be desired with the progtagonist, Yuna, coming across as unlikable, whiny and weak. But the gameplay itself is ultimately quite fun. The combat is like a faster, looser version of Star Ocean's with the main gimmick, being able to turn into a powerful dragon at will, proving extremely useful during the surprisingly difficult boss fights. There are no random encounters and you can easily avoid most normal encounters, but since fights are snappy grinding is rarely a chore unless you're severely underlevelled. The English voice acting is dull at times but inoffensive unless you absolutely positively HAVE to hear those glorious Nihongo seiyuu, in which case the Japanese audio is also available. I have yet to notice any obvious censorship or needless localization, which is a solid plus.

Almost Great... But Not Quite
I really wanted to love this game, because there are a lot of great things about it, but there are also a couple of really broken things that make it just an average quality JRPG.The good:The main storyline and voice acting is actually very good... enough so that it kept me playing through most of the game. There is a lot of talking though apart from the main storyline (dating scenes, etc.); those were interesting at first, but I kind of lost interest over time. The music is excellent. I liked all the j-pop songs scattered throughout. Also, I thought the idea of “armonics” (musical instrument weapons) was kind of neat. The graphics were pretty good (especially since this is originally a game from another system).Battle system - I actually think they did a decent job on this. It’s kind of action/adventure battle like a “Tales of” game. Sometimes the AI of your other party members isn’t the best, but usually you can work around it.The bad:Leveling!!! This is the reason I couldn’t find the motivation to complete this game. Characters not in your party don’t gain experience, but the story occasionally puts you in a situation where you have to use only one or two characters. So... everyone needs to be leveled. In town there is a place where you can grind through a somewhat random dungeon, and it’s sometimes required just to level up enough to get through the main story. Idk, just seems like a bad setup to me. I’m okay with grinding, but it was a little too much.Exploration... there’s basically one town in the whole game. And the outside of that town branches in one of two directions. The main story quests have you constantly walking through areas you’ve been through before. That and a lot of the buildup to the main storyline is just a series of fetch quests that get kind of boring. The battle camera is a little wonky. That said, you can target an enemy, which usually fixes the issue.I liked it!! I just didn’t love it.
