Review: This book will make you love Tableau! - I prepare reports for customers as part of my job, and I use Tableau predominantly (at least for now). When I started down this road of becoming a report generator, I struggled to understand the Tableau interface, and my reports reflected it. The data I was reporting against was complex, and I had workbooks that spanned multiple data sources but there were no data relationships defined across them, so I was having to duplicate my filters across views, and there always seemed to be one view I forgot to update. Formatting of axes and data point labels was confusing as well, and I just wasn't understanding the I remember reaching a point where I had to admit that I was in over my head, and that I needed some help to learn the tools better. I purchased this book, spent maybe three hours the first night just reading it, and the next day I was already seeing the benefits. I understood how to set up data relationships on fields across sources, created parameters to drive the whole workbook, and took advantage of maybe a dozen little features within the UI that, in and of themselves don't seem like much, but they allowed me to be much more productive. I created an extract on my laptop, so that the hotel WiFi I was using at the time would not hinder query time, I disabled the auto-refresh while I was making major changes to worksheets, to cut down further on wait time, and I learned that I can rename the fields to be anything I want, so that I could give them more presentation-friendly names. I'm still going back to this thing and picking up tips that I forgot about. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to be a better Tableau report builder.

Invaluable information for any analyst working in Tableau
Ryan Sleeper is a Tableau GOAT. I keep this book on my desk and use it as a resource when working in Tableau. It’s comprehensive, easy to understand and cuts out the fluff.

BLOWN AWAY!
This book is absolutely amazing! If you skip the first 10 pages and just jump into the meat of the book you'll be blown away with how easy it is to read and understand. I love how this book is based on the Superstore Data sample excel file. You can take practice from home to work and back. Its such an easy read...can't emphasize that enough. Im half way through the book already after only 2 days. There is 0 wait with this book!!! You want to learn how to do donut charts? Go here, do this....you want to understand dimensions vs measures? Go here, try this... YOU WILL LOVE THIS BOOK!!! Been a long time since I've found a how to book that actually is serviceable. I'm a business analyst and this is a game changer!

Fantastic Resource
This is a fantastic resource for any Tableau user. The books I've read about data visualization typically focus on the "why". Why do we need data visualization? Why use this chart over that? The books I've read about Tableau typically focus on the "how". How do I create a stacked bar chart? How do I create a dashboard? Practical Tableau answers both of those questions, and also answers the question, "So what?". If I create a beautiful chart emphasizing things that don't matter.... so what? If I find a story in my data, but the design is so jarring people can't stand to look at it... so what? The theme of the book seems to be "How can I best communicate to an audience to make a difference." The illustrations are beautiful and the instruction are easy to follow.

Will be a reference for years to come.
Working on taking my Tableau skills from beginner to intermediate, and this book has been exactly the resource I was looking for. Ryan Sleeper boils hundreds of pages of his blog down into one (somewhat sizable) book, and really walks through the process of using Tableau to your advantage. One of the things I've appreciated most so far is his willingness to walk through how to build all of the "out-of-the-box" charts manually so that you aren't forced to rely on the "Show Me" button in Tableau. This approach not only teaches you what Tableau is doing, but it also teaches you how you can customize your visualizations along the way, so you come out with a really unique product. I'm still working my way through this book, but I know already that it will be a resource that I go back to for years to come. Definitely recommend!

Extremely Thorough and Well Written
I've been aware of Ryan Sleeper's contributions to learning Tableau for some time now, primarily through his blog. This book is exceptionally well written, whether you read it from front to back or jump around as needed. When people ask me how they can learn Tableau competently and quickly, I discourage them from going to formal training workshops and instead, tell them to buy the Kindle edition of this book, and go through it in its entirety. For what it's worth, I am a Certified Tableau Desktop author and admin, with over six years of professional experience at the time of this review. Yet I still found many things that I didn't know as well as different approaches to solutions from Ryan's book.

As a veteran in Tableau, I learned new tricks!
I have been tasked with creating training on Tableau. I've been in the tool everyday for 7 years, so I'm afraid I'll miss something. I've learned since great tricks and it follows a logical path for new users as well. I follow Ryan's blog and it's always very helpful as well. I think some things are common sense, like color appreciation and design. However, developers don't understand it intuitively. Great resource!

Clear, Concise, Easy to Navigate
This books was sliced into bite-sized chapters with one concept each. It was easy to understand and spanned beginner to advanced topic. However, the organization was a little unclear--a topic would be brought up in Ch. 8 and then discussed again with much of the same information in Ch. 58. Plus, I could not find a table of contents in the kindle version; the index was the only way to search for particular chapters.

This book is really great if you want to understand the basics of Tableau, and has lots of tips as well. It provides detailed exercises to really understand every chapter.

Mr. Sellers writes a very useful book, you can tell he put the effort into his first book, which makes this a good buy and well worth the money. I'm hoping he put the same effort into his second as I will be buying that too. Chapters on conditional formatting and 100 point index are invaluable. His passion comes through and reinforces his place and status in the Tableau world. Just don't buy the ebook version, will drive you nuts, stick to the printed version.
