Favorite External Back-up drives.
I use these as back-up storage drives for my Sample libraries. I use them in pairs using the second drive to manually back-things up as needed. I like the large storage capacity and the price point. I have a couple dozen external drives including SSD. The speed of these via USB 3 gets the job done. The security factor, knowing if something happens my work is safe & backed-up, is worth the price of admission. That said in the last 15 years I haven't a single external drive fail. I'd like to think it's because I take of my equipment and don't move these around. I use SD cards when I need to transport my Beats, Samplea and DAW sessions. But it's more likely down to chance. I got thumb drive that was DOA once (irrelevant) Anyway, I make/produce music for a living, if something happens to my files there's no insurance that will make-up for the 1000s of hours I spend chopping/flipping and editing Samples or stacking/layering and Sound designing. Latet the files are used during beat creation. I have a system that depends on having reliable drives I also have over 100K Rare Vinyl LPs digitized on other drives. WD is my go-to for externals but I've used multiple different brands over the years. Okay let's run through the tags. These are not portable drives. I guess you could put them in a case but nah. Power source is an adapter with a barrel that plugs into the drive. My project studio at home is all Win/PC but I also use Mac's at a commercial studio. Compatibility depends on how you format the drives. The Mac computers at my commercial studio are connected to Lacie & Glyph drives for the most part. When I transfer files back & forth, I use an SD card reader/writer and my Akai MPC Files are universal. If you use these with a Mac format the drive for Mac OS. Using a PC format the drive for Windows. These aren't backwards compatible. You can't plug one into a Mac, eject the drive and plug the same drive into a Windows PC. It's one or the other. Is it technically possible with dual boot and all that, probably but you should format the drive for the system you're using it with. Format accordingly. Drive size 12TB or 24TB it's up to you. I like the lego style drive design, those are the coolest drives I have style wise. These are fingerprint magnets. But they look fine. See included photos. Hopefully that covers the tags, The drives are good I'll continue to grab these as needed. Good luck.

WD NEVER HAS DISSAPOINTED ME
Like always, WD is just the B..E...S...T!...I don't trust any other brand, no matter what others says, but this brand is just amazing!...I had a 4 TB WD that I was using for at least 1 year, then I bought a seagate...and believe it or not, the seagate stopped working in less than 6 months, I bought another WD, gave mine away as a gift and still working, and the seagate disk, I have it in some place around the house as a piece of garbage. So, what I'm trying to say with this is: don't trust any other brand, buy a WD blindfolded and live a happy life.

I own 5 of these
No joke, I own 5 of these Ranging from 2T to 14T and I swear by them. I use a 14T and 10T as family media servers and they're awesome. My 2T is several years old and still going strong so quality and durability are top notch. The data transfer speed is stellar allowing streaming directly from the drive without issue. The drive size per dollar is the best to be found. Not much else to say, really

Fantastic Value for High Capacity Storage
I had been looking at 10TB drives for quite a while, with a plan to purchase 3 of them for my home NAS. During my search, I found these drives on sale for less than half the cost of a bare 10TB WD Red. I decided to take a chance and shuck these drives for 24/7 use in my server. Upon receiving them, I thoroughly tested them before shucking to make sure I didn't get a dud. If you plan on shucking, I'd recommend you do the same. Each drive took about 16 hours to fully test given the large capacity, but all came back OK with no errors or bad sectors. I installed them in my server and they were recognized right away. FreeNAS picked them up and I was able to build a RAID-Z1 array with no trouble. It was a nice surprise to see that the drives inside were WD100EMAZ, which to my understanding are extremely similar to WD Red's. To those complaining about these drives only being 9.09TB, that is a given and you will likely never find a 10TB drive (or any drive) that shows as its labeled capacity. That's just how storage and formatting work and how it has worked for a very long time. Buy a 1TB hard drive and you will find that it shows up as 931GB. It is more noticeable on large capacity drives like this, but the percentage lost is more or less the same. I've been very happy with these drives. They are currently at about 1000 power on hours and still error free. If you're looking for cheap, high capacity storage, these are a great choice whether you shuck them like I did or use them as external drives. Keep an eye out for sales, as they seem to go on sale somewhat often for a decent discount.

The Best Portable Large Capacity Drive For Your Money.
I purchased this drive in January of 2020. I bought mine with a 10 terabyte capacity. In terms of portability, it does require A.C power so keep that in mind when you are traveling. However, if you are somebody that needs to have access to a large amount of data or have space for large amounts of data at any given time, then you really can't do much better than this drive. For the price, you are getting a great value with these drives. From disassembly videos, it seems that most of this elements contain Western Digital Red drives. To buy just that hard drive (at an equal storage size as an Elements) it is actually cheaper to buy the Elements than it is to just buy the Red hard drive with no enclosure. When doing data transfers, the drive is fast. I've gotten nearly a true 5gps transfer speed when copying large files. If I had to guess, I would say the drive inside runs at about 5400 or 5600 rpm. While it's not as fast as 7200 or an SSD drive, i'm guessing that it will have a longer longevity than faster hard disk drives. The only time the slower rotation speed becomes a bother is when you haven't accessed the drive for about a half hour. It seems to have an idle mode where it is on standby. When you go back to the drive to access information, it takes about 20 seconds for it to wake back up and get back up to speed. It's not really a problem if you are constantly reading and writing information, but it can be a small nuisance when accessing it intermittently. Long Story short, if you are looking for a drive that has a very large storage capacity, is relatively portable, and is cheap, then look no further. Are there better and faster drives out there? Yes. They also cost more. I have used this drive for video editing and have actively edited movies off of this drive with footage up to 2k resolution with no problem. The main option you are probably comparing this to is the My Book which is also made by Western Digital. The only difference with that drive is that it comes with encryption software, and allows the drive to be accessed by a network. If you need network access then the choice is clear, but if you want the My Book for the encryption software, be aware there are hundreds of other encryption programs available (some of them are free and actually work very well), and purchasing the My Book for that option is sort of a waste of money. If you just need a drive for the storage capacity and nothing else, then this drive is for you.

Great job delivering!
Everything was delivered as planned, and in the dead of winter. Please give the delivery driver credit for doing their job successfully. I want to apologize to Amazon for my absence of thought regarding my previous, unedited, review of them as a company. I think they are just the best, and I don't know if I could ever use anyone else. Just beyond amazing service. Don't even ask me to switch. Next time, I will do better to choose my words correctly. I was just very excited. That being said, the product itself, is better than others I currently own and, holds a really great amount of data for the price. I very much recommend This item, and Amazon customer service, ofc.

Yo these work like a beast, but keep in mind....
WD 10TB Elements Desktop Hard Drive - USB 3.0 - WDBWLG0100HBK-NESN PRO: MASSIVE AMOUNT OF SPACE (at least for me) CON: NO STAND AND Limit transfer speed to USB 3.0. -They work so well I got a few of them for redundant backups. -HOW EVER KEEP IN MIND THAT THEY ARE USB 3.0 Micro Cable. -I use a higher quality USB 3.0 Micro Cable than the one that comes with the drive to keep the transfer speed up and ensure a better connection. -Next step - down load "Data Lifeguard Diagnostic - WD Support - Western Digital" and the VERY first thing you do is to run a EXTENDED Diagnostic on the drive before you return period is over. If you find a problem return it, the diagnostic will take a few hours but better than being stuck with damaged drive. -Drive is preformatted using exFAT ensuring max compatibility with different operating systems. -These are also air cooled with no fan and as I added a small desktop fan to keep the temp down. These drives will get warm/hot. -Because these drives are meant to be operated standing up they have tiny stand off legs and are very easy to accidentally knock over. -Need to be VERY careful NOT to accidentally knock these over which also means no banging on the surface that supports these drives. -These drives also have no encryption so any device that connects these drives in theory can access all your files. -I would not run programs from these drives. Should you shuck these drives? Well, you need to accept all responsibility if you do so. I did not shuck my drives. My purpose is to preserve data. Have fun!

good drive so far
This review is for the 10 TB model. When I received the drive I used the WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic program to run an extended test to make sure the drive was sound. This test initially said it would take 14 hours but it ended up taking almost 20 hours. The drive passed and hopefully that means it is good. It's always worth it to do this test imo so you can catch a bad drive at the start before you load your data onto it. After the test finished I opened the case and inside it was a white label wd100emaz-00WJTA0, the helium filled variety as I had hoped. So I'm happy I saved some money and got a good drive out of it. To open the case I had really good luck cutting an old gift card into 4 even pieces and sliding those in the cracks in the back of the case above and below the port area. I'm using this drive to store many different types of files anything from large videos to games. I tested the drive with CrystalDiskMark and it is capable of about 190-200MB/s. In my real world test transferring videos that were several GB I got around 180 MB/s which I am happy with. It can dip to a lower speed when the files are smaller but that's to be expected. So far this is a good drive and I really hope it lasts me many years. I will update this review if I have any issues.

If only others read the reviews here!
Pros > As described. Seems okay to me. > See CrystalDiskInfo for the details. > Purchased for £160! Cons > No one else seems to have read the description! This is a US product, so comes with a US plug. Use a US>UK converter plug. > Seems a little noisey but that's probaby no different to other drives. > Bought when this cost £130, but with added import changes cost £160. An unexpected bump in the price, but otherwise liveable.
