The Grade 1 Spectrum Reading workbook is perfect for families that have students transitioning from 1st to 2nd grade. I highly recommend using it in the summer, as it begins with a quick review of skills learned at the beginning of 1st grade, and gets more difficult. It also provides extra support to parents helping their child with their school skills. I would recommend this workbook to all my students' parents.

I think this activity book overall has some solid content and there are nice extras like the ability to continue working on skills on the iXL platform. The book starts out relatively simple but gets progressively harder- a little bit too challenging in my opinion for a first grader. It is easier for me to review the analytical questions verbally than expecting a first grader to write down all of the answers. Case in point in one story the question is “what is the central message of the story”? It is a little difficult to interpret for a first grader and I had to reword to “what was the story about?” My child reads well above grade level and still found the reading comprehension written activities hard. So I think it is a good book but definitely help is needed from a parent or adult to work through the book. I do appreciate the answer key- but again some of the questions are open for interpretation so seeing AWV in the key which I assume is answers will vary isn’t all that helpful.

My daughter is one of those kids that enjoys school and especially likes workbooks. Unfortunately, she didn't really want to start this over summer because she hasn't technically started 1st grade yet. So despite her enthusiasm for this she hasn't really cracked it open. I however have perused this and I really like what the content has to offer. It starts off basic and expands on concepts and challenge as it progresses as you might expect and based on what I can tell, does so in a good way. I feel once my daughter does decide to sit down and spend time with this that the concepts she'll be presented with will be appropriate for her grade. I am not an educator, but I feel the content and the manner in which its presented will prove valuable for my 1st grader. Of note, build quality is great. This could spend a year in a childs backpack and get the expected wear and tear without falling apart.

What really stands out is how well the workbook is organized. Each chapter begins with a helpful parent support page that gives clear explanations, tips, and a list of skills that will be covered. This makes it much easier to guide my child and understand what each lesson is aiming to achieve. The inclusion of a full answer key is also very helpful for quick checking and tracking progress.The activities cover key areas like phonics, sight words, and reading comprehension, and they build gradually in difficulty. I appreciate the lesson reviews that appear after each unit—they're great for reinforcing what’s just been learned before moving on. Another plus is the size and layout of the pages. There's plenty of space for writing, and the illustrations help keep things visually interesting without being distracting. My child enjoys the workbook and doesn't feel overwhelmed by the tasks.

As a homeschooling parent, we have used quite a few of the spectrum books in our house over the years. I don't often feel like one can fully serve as a standalone text for that subject, but they are a great supplement, especially when you're in a slump and you need to change things up. Our kids typically do two pages per day of whatever spectrum workbooks they are using at that time. At that pace, they would definitely finish a book in less than a school year, so usually we will have them working in a couple subjects at a time and then switch to a different set when they finish the books.First graders can be at such a range of skills, I purchased this for my rising first grader and until he's a stronger reader, he will need my help with most of this, but I definitely like that includes both vocabulary and reading comprehension type activities.Spectrum workbook are always great quality, and have really solid content. Highly recommend for homeschooling family, or for anyone who wants a little reinforcement at home.
