Artful Design: Technology in Search of the Sublime, A MusiComic Manifesto

One of the best design books out there currently...
Framed in the lens of a computer music scientist and innovative music interface designer, this book tells a story of form and function that delves into the deeper philosophical realms of creativity and social/cultural responsibility of designers and technologists. The book cumulates into a manifesto for humanist engineering, driven by flourishing (wo)man-kind. The form of the book matches its high performing function, delivered in a graphic novel format that is easily digested and entertaining. Incredible piece of work, that picks up beautifully where design thinking and human centered design leave off.

a truly remarkable book
I bought this book awhile ago, but just recently had the chance to read through it. What a fun and amazing read! Ge's presentation and creativity is truly inspiring, which is what I believe is his primary objective in the book. At first I thought "oh this is just goofiness that will wash out", but the further I went in the book the more I realized that Ge was grappling with deep ideas AND doing a bang-up pedagogical job, too. I plan to use this in my classes as an outstanding example of what's possible if you're willing to stretch your thinking a bit. Thanks, Ge! *Highly* recommended for anyone working in the creative/design arts. Heck, *highly* recommended for most anyone, period.

Bad for Kindles
This book is a very fun read, but incredibly disappointing when I try reading on my Kindle. The choice of font is not websafe which causes missing words or incorrect spellings to come through. Plus, many of the images did not come through. I feel like I am missing half of the story and I wish you took the time to proofread on Kindle. This book should only be sold as hard copy. Definitely not worth $30. Kindle version is worth about $5

Excellent read with a guaranteed unique presentation
This book dives into all things design and technology and it's all packaged in a very interesting way. A pleasure to read for both the words it contains and the thoughtfulness of the presentation. Highly recommended!

Design and aesthetics
Through the stories of designing computer music instruments, the book approaches more philosophical questions such as aesthetics and design principles. Reading the book is a wonderful journey.

A design manifesto that is relevant to our current times, highly recommend
Artful Design is a manifesto — a document not seen as much anymore in recent times in the design community, especially in the format of a (comic) book — that takes the reader on a thought provoking journey of what it means to design in the current world that has been permeated with technology. In a domain that is full of books on how to design, Artful Design offers a refreshing perspective by also creating dialogue on what we design, and why.Even though it is presented in the lightweight format of a comic book, make no mistake, this book is dense and offers a lot to noodle on. By embracing the medium of the comic, the author creates an accessible, whimsical, and rather unique narrative around the meaning of design. Through the interweaving of case studies of particular objects, experiences, artworks, etc. and more abstract conversations with himself, other humans, and the occasional inanimate object, the book distills a set of principles that form the core of Artful Design."What we make, makes us". If you are someone who designs or makes anything, or even just someone who appreciates the interplay between aesthetics and technology, I would highly recommend this for to you.

Walks the Walk
Some people talk about "innovation". Others produce books like this, which is the coolest instantiation of design I have ever seen. Bravo!

A masterful exploration of the borders between art, humanities and engineering
This book is amazing and I recommend it to anyone, but especially people with an engineering or design background. Wang's descriptions and explorations of the ways we can incorporate our humanity into the design of technology is awesome. Told through the perspective of creating musical instruments out of computers, he allows people to understand all elements of design and engineering in a holistic and unique perspective. Not to mention it is aesthetically beautiful. A great piece of work
