'Bulgakov is one of the greatest Russian writers, perhaps the greatest' Independent Written in secret during the darkest days of Stalin's reign, The Master and Margarita became an overnight literary phenomenon when it was finally published it, signalling artistic freedom for Russians everywhere. Bulgakov's carnivalesque satire of Soviet life describes how the Devil, trailing fire and chaos in his wake, weaves himself out of the shadows and into Moscow one Spring afternoon. Brimming with magic and incident, it is full of imaginary, historical, terrifying and wonderful characters, from witches, poets and Biblical tyrants to the beautiful, courageous Margarita, who will do anything to save the imprisoned writer she loves. Translated by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky with an Introduction by Richard Pevear Review: Good edition of the Pevear and Volokhonsky translation from Penguin - This Penguin classics edition has the Pevear and Volokhonsky translation with the usual extra material of an introduction, chronology, further reading list, and notes at the end. The text of the book is towards the smaller side but it is still well readable so that's not an issue for me. The book is towards the floppy side which is good, its not rigid and difficult to hold while reading. It opens flat on its spine, making for a easy reading experience, and the spine won't crack unless one wrestles with it unnecessarily. Review: A timeless classic! - Mikhail Bulgakov's written The Master and Margarita arrived just today. My significant other gifted this to me on my birthday! I have not started reading it till now, definitely have high expectations from this classic. Loved it! This book tells the love story of a man only named as 'The Master' and Margarita, while exploring the themes of good and evil, and how they are interrelated. This modern Russian classic literature promises that it deals with humor, social satire of Soviet life, and also sensual: so it was censored as it was written secretly during Stalin's dark reign. In short the book is about how a woman will go to any extent and will do anything to protect and bring back her man from imprisonment. This is the information I gathered before buying this book! Talking about the packaging it was okay: as they could take care of the book while packing, the edges were tampered just a little bit (refer to the picture). Delivery was unexpectedly before time, like they delivered it 3 days earlier, which pretty much impressed me to be honest. But in major part of the book the printing is not commendably: it's kind of hazy, though readable and not a big issue. Still I would prefer Penguin publishing house to take care of the printing and overall content. Rest everything is perfect. Thank you! If wondering whether to buy it or not, you should buy this no matter what. This is definitely worth reading.

A Wild, Strange, and Unforgettable Masterpiece
Mikhail Bulgakov’s The Master and Margarita is a unique blend of satire, fantasy, romance, philosophy, and dark comedy. When the Devil arrives in 1930s Moscow with a bizarre group of companions, chaos follows, while another storyline explores the Master’s novel about Pontius Pilate. The book’s greatest strength is its imagination and originality. It can be hilarious one moment and deeply philosophical the next, exploring themes of good and evil, love, art, censorship, and freedom. The story can feel confusing at first because of its multiple plotlines and strange characters, but it becomes increasingly rewarding. Overall: ⭐ 5/5 A truly unforgettable classic—**strange, funny, philosophical, and unlike almost anything else in literature.**

Perhaps one of the greatest stories ever told.
Recieved my copy in pristine condition. It's a P&V translation. Beautiful meditation on art, love and redemption. 5/5

Cathartic and immortal
Before reading this book, I didn't have much exposure to Stalin-era literature, maybe except Dr Zhivago. This book is witty, funny, racy, brillant, religious, absurd, evocative, intriguing, lovelorn, and immortal. I was almost ready to write immoral, but in a deeper sense that would not have been true. His religion and deep sense of morality is veiled by irreverence, which, by the way, is quite misleading. But when the party is over and the fun there is only an intoxicating memory, you are not left high and dry. You will feel emotions coiling up inside your throat like a python. Your knees will tremble as you have never felt this fire, this burning, this catharsis. After finishing this book, you'll become one of the immortals too, for you can't be otherwise.

Great start but stretchy
I bought this book about a year ago.. at first I was bit spectacle about reading it i tried to but couldn't. it was overwhelming. Now after a year I grab this book again started... this book is diveded into two books l first the master and then margarita. starting with master - book one. it was a good reading i completed almost all chapter in sitting and was left with last 3-4 chapter, at first the book was easy going and interesting but somehow at the end this is so strechy unnecessary characters getting add up and their unnecessary back story... i skipped whole last chapter it was getting so hard to read.. then i started second part - margarita, it was good and quick at start and suddenly it was something not what the book should be.. unnecessary drama unnecessary plot forsed story stretch and at the end i didn't finish this...

Maravilhoso
