The critics and public agree. Brian De Palma’s The Untouchables is a must-see masterpiece--a glorious, fierce, larger-than-life depiction of the mob warlord who ruled Prohibition-era Chicago... and the law enforcer who vowed to bring him down. This classic confrontation between good and evil stars Kevin Costner as federal agent Eliot Ness, Robert De Niro as gangland kingpin Al Capone and Sean Connery as Malone, the cop who teaches Ness how to beat the mob: shoot fast and shoot first. Special Features Review: Good movie - Costner, Garcia, and Connery are very good. Review: Not Factual But Still Well Done! - Not factual but good entertainment! Sean Connery always does a great job of acting. This is Kevin Costner in his heyday. Robert De Niro does a wicked bad guy. He plays Al Capone. Lots of good verses bad in this flick wherein the good triumphs. Prohibition era bad guys are still sociopaths. The film ends where prohibition is repealed. One idea being that the fight was for nothing, I suppose. Except, I think the point is that whenever something is against the law--whether drugs, murder, alcohol, prostitution, or anything else, for that matter (it could be eating butternut squash), the sociopaths will do whatever they can to do what is forbidden and make a buck off of it--their ego demands nothing less. Then there are the folks who see it as their duty to prevent the bad guys from getting away with whatever it is they are doing because innocent people get hurt and laws are broken. So good versus bad. With lots of action and tugging on the heart strings, this movie satisfies that hunger to identify with bravery, courage, doing the right thing--and winning. Again, even though Capone went down for tax evasion, he still went down and although this movie errs on the side of fantasy of the fixings surrounding that incarceration, it was good, action filled entertainment.

A solid gangster film
The Untouchables is a solid effort from Brian De Palma describing the corruption and greed in the Chicago area during the Prohibition era. Kevin Costner stars as the earnest federal agent Eliot Ness whose ideals are put to the test in his attempt to put away the powerful Al Capone, played with zeal by Robert De Niro. While unable to prove some of the larger evils perpetrated by Capone and his henchman, Ness forms a team of his own and in the process learns to put aside some of his idealistic notions of crime fighting in favor of a more practical approach. It is this support team that forms a solid acting backbone, with tremendous performances put in by Sean Connery as Malone who teaches Ness his unique approach to Chicago-style justice, Andy Garcia as the sharp-eyed rookie fresh out of the academy, and Charles Martin Smith as the everyman accountant who gives Ness the initial idea to bring Capone to justice by tax fraud. Perhaps the strongest performance in the film is none other than Ennio Morricone's rousing score which lifts several scenes in the movie to mythic proportions and helps set the tempo of this film. Morricone's mastery of the musical medium is on full display here, from the suspenseful and dramatic opening theme to the eerie baby lullaby in the classic Potemkin-inspired train station shootout scene to the triumphant victory in the courthouse room. The wide variety of styles Morricone employs in the film proves to be the ideal partner to the solid cinematic work and acting in the film. The Blu-ray edition of this film is a solid effort. The transfer won't erase some of obvious special effect deficiencies of its day (take a look at when Costner pushes a Capone henchman off the courthouse roof), but the mooted grays depicted in this film serve the accentuate the moral grays the characters find themselves working in. The soundtrack has been cleaned up and while there's no uncompressed audio track, it still serves a beautiful English 6.1 DTS track which is to be expected given the film's age. Last of all, the disc contains a solid set of dated extras containing discussions from cast and crew about how the film came together from costume design all the way to the shooting of certain scenes. This is a solid addition for any gangster film aficionado. See it for it's amazing dramatic action sequences and amazing film score as well don't miss a powerhouse performance turned in by Sean Connery.

Brilliantly and stylishly recreated story about Elliot Ness and Al Capone
The Untouchables is one of the best movies of the '80's, gathering some of the finest actors of of all generations - Sean Connery, Robert DeNiro, Kevin Costner and Andy Garcia - in a memorable piece of cinema that has only grown better with age. Perhaps De Palma's masterpiece, The Untouchables won the Academy's hearts and Sean Connery finally got his Oscar, which was long overdue, for the role of a tough but honored beat cop, Malone, who helps Elliot (Costner) Ness take down Al Capone (DeNiro) Fast-paced, it's filled with action, but it's never action-driven, sometimes slowing down to present the viewers with good moments of intimacy between the characters - like when the Untouchables are celebrating after they first case, or between Ness and his family. DeNiro gives a brilliant performance as a ruthless Al Capone who thinks he's above law and will do anything to keep it away from him. Even in the hands of De Palma this movie could have failed, were it not for a very intelligent script filled with catchy one-liners and well-thought dialogues. Finally, the score adds a lot to the movie's strength, either assisting the action during the shootouts, or just using a more depressing tone when the movie slows down to a more emotional feel. 10 out of 10, a movie that everyone who likes thrillers shouldn't miss.

C L A S S I C Mobster Movie.
Classic Prohibition-era mobster movie. Dialogue is a bit corny from beginning to end, a lot of bravado and righteousness, good vs. evil, blood oath and sacrifice, etc. from the Untouchables crew vs. Al Capone's Chicago Outfit. De Niro as Capone is probably his best role as a mob boss, just absolutely a dick. You get to see a tough Irish beat-cop Sean Connery gets Tommy-Gunned by the spookiest and creepiest 80's movie bad guy Billy Drago. You get to see a young, clean, impressionable, greenhorn looking Andy Garcia as a straight out of police academy sharp shooter sidekick to Eliot Ness. And then we have Eliot Ness played by Kevin Costner when he actually had a lot of hair and less acting skill. The story is based on the true event. In real life thing did not go down this way, so just enjoy the action and Google the historical facts later. There are SO MANY classic scenes in this movie- the "baseball at round dinner table scene", the "recruiting Giuseppe Petri (Andy Garcia) at pistol range" scene, the best- "Chicago train station shoot-out" scene. Check this movie out!

Ein Klassiker
schlechthin.

Great 4K release.
A good 4K transfer and good DTS-X sound, the voices are easy to hear and the soundtrack score is very clear. Sharp picture and even colours, worth the money if you are a fan.

I watched this when it came out decades ago and loved it then. I figured it was time to show it to my son, and he thoroughly enjoyed it too. Classic movie, the additional features were disappointing but then we just wanted to watch the movie...
