AquaClear 30 Power Filter, Fish Tank Filter for 10- to 30-Gallon Aquariums

This is my second purchase of the AquaClear 30 Hagen Power Filter (AKA: "Fluval 30"), the 10-30 gallon adjustable flow OTB filter. I have a 10G standard tank and a 20G high tank. This filter is ideal for both. It is dead quiet (I have both tanks in my living room) and I cannot tolerate motor noise or a constant hum (I have a really quiet air pump in the room as well!). It would drive me up the wall. So... quiet. Very quiet. This thing can run 150gph through itself. That's turning over all the water in a 30G tank five times every hour. But, best of all, if you turn it down (and for a 10 or 20 you need to!), it recirculates water inside itself and refilters it many times before the waterfall. This is what they claim, and I think it's true. Can't prove it. So... plenty of suction. The part that holds the filter material in place (a sort of removable U-shaped shelf) can be easily removed while the filter is running if you take it slow, otherwise it gets a little sloppy. Same thing when you put it back. They provide you with filter stuff. My advice... keeping the big sponge is a must, that's an integral part of the system, and then get yourself whatever filter media you like in bulk blankets. I don't use charcoal other than when I need to clear some medication or something, so I use a dual-density very fine polyester mechanical filter (comes in mats, cut to size, good for years) as the "polishing" stage, then I have a bag of bio-rock matrix sitting on top just before the waterfall. Works for me. I cut what I need, and it's lots cheaper than cartridges and all that. (This filter runs water from the bottom up through the various media and out the top for the waterfall. Bear that in mind when you stack things up.) Disassembly is easy-peasy. CAUTION!!!!!! When you take the pump assembly off (a quarter-turn, and it comes right off), do it over a towel away from anything where you can lose a small part. The impeller is right there, magnetically bound to it's shaft. You need to remove it (tweezers, like that) and rinse out that chamber as well as clean off the impeller. It's not THAT small, but you really don't want to lose it down the sink! And, like all OTB filters, the U-channel that carries water over the back is hard to get clean. Get REALLY flexible tube brushes... 3/4" and 1" will to nicely. You have to get around a 90 degree bend. Other than that... nothing to complain about, and that's a necessary design they all have. And last, it's low profile. The entire unit sticks up about one inch (2.6 cm) above the tank. The little flow adjusting handle thingy protrudes another little bit above that, but the whole thing is very unobtrusive. Perfect for a display tank. The one thing I wish OTB filters had is an in-line ON/OFF switch and a disconnect so you don't have to dig around and unplug it when you want to service it or just turn it off for feeding time. I can do that stuff myself, but if *I* want something like that, I bet lots of folks do. ::hint hint:: Anyway, I love this filter.

This works perfectly in my coffee table aquarium. I wanted filtration with out bubbles.great size and great filtration. Easy to install and great value.

I use it for my 5 gallons saltwater aquarium, where I keep two small clownfish. I like this filter because it has the same media type as the one I have in the canister (external filter) on my larger aquarium (ceramic pellets, carbon pellets, fine filter media, and coarse sponge). It has made much difference in the frequency of water changes in the small aquarium. The noise level is very acceptable; I have it in my office, which doesn't bother me. It is easy to clean too. Also, the water current disperses well over the surface and below in the small aquarium. The current is soft at it seems to delight the clownfish. The biofilter is great, and it made a great home for the small critters that live in the media. As for anyone thinking that the aquarium may be too small for just two clownfish, well, it is not. They are thrilled at all times and prefer to be there than in the larger aquarium tank. Possibly as they keep growing, I will have to put them in a larger tank. In the pictures, you will also see another skimmer filter on the right; it has also being a great addition to the tank. This small water tank has an air gravel filter, a multiple media filter, and a skimmer. It may look like a filter exaggeration; however, the water is clear for moths, and the fish are healthy and happy. Thanks to the three types of filtration, I have extended the cleaning and water changes from one month to four months.

Again i researched dozens of hours (time worth hundreds of dollars) to find better filter and i guess aquaclear is one of em. I am not sure coz i didn't use it and returned this product for replacement. You can customize media easily. The reason i took away one star is that like almost all other products this is advertised wrongly. They say its good for upto 30 gallon tank but after i researched it is proved that you need minimum 50 or max 70 for 30 gallon tank. I returned this and ordered aquaclear 70. Some people might say this would be overkill for 29 gallon tank but its not coz they used same motor unit for up to 70 which sounds stupid to me. Only thing they did is increased the size of filter. I ordered 70 for 29 gallon tank coz its proved that once you customize media, it can decrease water flow significantly and in that case aquaclear 30 won't even serve a 20 gallon tank either. I highly recommend to buy 70 for 30 gallon tank so you can put extra media and water flow would be ok. Another worse thing about this filter is its spare parts. I was looking online and found parts for up to $50 and i bought new whole filter for $50. Isn't it insane? Why am gonna spend lot of money to buy a part instead i'd buy new one. And i guess that's what they want. Besides these things i hope this is one of the best filter available. I highly recommend this filter but just buy right size not what is described by manufacturer. UPDATES: After using several months i want to add few things. I bought aquaclear 70 for 29 gallon tank but i found out it has more current than required as my plant's leaves were shaking and my dwarf grass was pulled out because of high current. I'd buy aquaclear 50 instead for 29 gallon tank, only if impeller is smaller than aquaclear70, otherwise i would go for aquaclear30. People just post comments without testing products thoroughly therefore spread false information. It was in my mind that this filter could be too powerful for my 29 gallon tank but in future i'd keep bigger tank and i would use it in new tank. To reduce current i put 100 micron polishing pad in filter and kept flow on lower lvl. This product is solid 5 star product but it would be awesome if manufacturer make outlet part longer by one or two inches as when water drops from 3, 4 inch height, it make a splash that disturb your plants and even doesn't' look nice. I put a biological filter under outlet so there is almost minimum current on my water surface. This is the only thing i want them to improve. And yes after half an year i am giving my aquaclear70 5 stars☺☻☺

What a terrible design; and an inefficient product ! I'm absolutely amazed that some people like it! 1) Getting all the elements ready and installed in the filter is a complete pain. The fact that they have all 3 elements is good: sponge, carbon and pebbles is nice; but they are all stacked onto eachother, so you need to take the whole stack out to change one element. emptying the water first, and putting water back before you start the pump, as it can't start dry. You have to put yourself the pebbles in a flimsy nylon net, cut it to size and terminate it... whereas all other manufacturers have products ready to go after it's unpacked. This is inconvenient and messy as the pebbles create dust. This is probably because they have many sizes of filters and instead of creating packages for each size (like other manufacturers do with M, L, X, XL), they let you do the last step of the production work! I'd be okay with that if the price was extremely cheap, but it's the same price range as other manufacturers for similar products. 2) The sponge is very flimsy. You won't really be able to rince it on a regular basis and expect a long life; probably a marketing design to get you to buy sponges on a regular basis. 3) Last but not least: the mechanical process by which the water is sucked in... is a really bad design. For a product hat is supposed to have "Filtration volume is up to 7 times larger than comparable filters" I never got better than a trickle of water, following the instructions carefully. Probably if you try and re-stack everything many times, until you find the right position for everything; but you're going to have to empty the whole filter first, re-stack, fill it up again, try to see if you get better suction, and do the whole process again if it doesn't start right. And even if you get it to work well one time... you're up for pain when you have to go through the process again. Bottom line this is a terrible design. I have tested 3 filters so far; and for as much as i thought the more expensive ones would be better, so far the Aqueon is the most convenient.

Works exactly as expected. It's very quiet, pumps efficiently, and filters extremely well. One thing to note- when I first bought this and started using it, it was pretty noisy. After about a week it became whisper quiet, to the point where it's hard to tell if it's even on sometimes. I think this is due to the fact that the impeller doesn't sit very tight in its housing. However, this is a good thing because it allows for a small amount of algae/ gunk buildup on the impeller's parts and that's inevitable. Once that builds up, the impeller functions much better and silences itself. I've tried cleaning the impeller for maintenance and it becomes loud again until the gunk builds back up, so now I just leave it alone with no issues at all. Another good thing- The filter process on this is extremely efficient. The water flows up from the bottom of the filter housing through 3 separate levels of filtration (sponge, charcoal, bio-blocks). This works soooo much better than the bio-wheel filters I've used before. Additionally, this filter has a bypass system, where if the filters get too clogged the water is still free to flow. My filter has become extremely full before with hardly any need for the water to go through the bypass, this filter is awesome at what it does. Once the sponge filter is dirty and clogged, there's no need to buy a new one to replace it. I've been rinsing/ wringing it out every water change for months and it still works like it's brand new (rinse out in the water you just removed, not tap water. Tap water can cause chemical shock and start a re-cycle of your tank). I also gently swish around the charcoal filter but mostly leave it alone. Try not to touch the bio-blocks, you don't want to disturb the bacteria that grows on them. Rinsing or cleaning that is a BIG no-no. You'll be surprised how much gunk comes out of the sponge when you clean it, you can really tell this thing does its job well. Bottom line- excellent product. Will definitely buy again if needed, would definitely recommend. Tip- buy one just slightly bigger than needed for your tank, I've always found this to be more efficient. I use this in my 20 gallon tank, even though it's rated for up to 30 gallons. If the current is too much for your fish, use the built-in flow adjuster to tone it down a little (think about it this way- if you buy one rated for up to 20 gallons, and use it in a 20 gallon tank, you're using it at maximum capacity and won't get as good results. Using one designed for up to 30 gallons will give you a "buffer zone" and will work better overall)

Purchased almost 10 years ago, still working great!

Always use the aquaClear fluval brand filters. Reusable sponge. Intake pre-filter sponge. Great power. Can last very long with proper maintenance. Will not leak when properly mounted. Fits on regular tanks but can fit on rimless. When kept serviced it is quiet.

Great quality hangon back filter, easy to assemble & definitely considering getting an aquaclear 50 for my next open top aquarium set up, great seller, imported delivery was tracked all the way

Fa un buon lavoro, ma su questi filtri il problema è la durata. (primo commento) Dopo più di due anni, funziona ancora benissimo, è silenzioso sempre (chi dice di no forse inserisce male il tubo o lo fa urtare contro qualcosa), infatti l'ho ricomprato per un altro acquario. Questo nuovo però sembra avere una aspirazione inferiore : il getto d'acqua è minore rispetto all'altro.
