My parents use to have a mathmos lava lamp & has a kid I use to watch it & found it hypnotic & although expensive compared to local stores like B&M were the build quality of there’s is extremely poor compared to a genuine mathmos lava lamp & worth the extra money for my reasons at the end of my review . I received this with excitement & to relive my childhood . Although my parents had the larger one I was impressed with its size upon opening the box . With this being the Astro baby I expected it to be much smaller . The base was nice & gleaming & it looked great . I plugged it in following simple instructions. One of the bulbs was open & already in the lamp when I opened the box & I plugged it in but it kept randomly turning off after a period of time 3mins on at most & flickering . I tried the 2nd bulb has you receive 2 which is great has they are £10 on there own via there website . I chose red wax / violet but that looked like there were bits floating inside & I’m assuming if it would have stayed on & not kept switching off & actually got hot enough for the wax to melt this would have cleared & was probably due to the lamp being new & never been used since being produced in the factory . Due to it turning off & wouldn’t stay on for any length of time not even to melt the wax I did a return it which was easy enough & I decided to try a cheaper model that obviously isn’t has well made but this brand looked better build quality than the B&M models however this was doing the same randomly turning off & flickering . It seems that where I want this lamp positioned & needing a extension lead due to no sockets in the corner it turns out it was the extension lead causing the fault & not the lamp I received so I’m a little disappointed to have thought it was the lamp at fault & returning it . British made well built & although I like this alternative for the time being I think I will re/purchase a mathmos soon has nothing looks better than there’s even though I never saw it fully working. it did look really well made & nothing compares to a genuine mathmos made in Great Britain (a rare thing nowadays) & unlike this alternative I now have mathmos provide other bottles if you fancy a change & comes in parts this lava lamp style lamp is one whole unit & when broke it’s all throwaway landfill & that’s were mathmos differ & worth paying that bit extra for . . Very disappointed but not with the item I received myself for thinking the lamp was faulty .

Hi everyone. Where to start? Well. The packaging is of the very, very first quality. The lava lamp itself is just perfection,( I actually owned an original, way back in the 70s) but, alas and alack, it was lost during the passage of my life, (12 years a soldier, divorce etc.) If you really want the absolutely best lava lamp, than look no further than Mathmos. This is a fantastic piece of kit. How many English companies can now opine: We have spare parts that can fix one of our products that your parents bought in the 60s/70s." Nuff said I reckon. I've been enjoying mine for over four hours now, it is so relaxing and brings back so many good memories while I indulge in a night of red wine and early Floyd, The Doors and ELP. My daughter loves this. Such a nice addition to her room. Would be 5starts but The bulbs don't have a long life, circa 40hrs.

I bought this as a replacement for my much loved Mathmos lava lamp that my sister gifted me for my 16th Birthday back in the 90s. 28 years later it finally gave up on me yesterday which was a sad moment as it lamp has been with me through my teenage years, uni, multiple house moves and life changes etc and has always looked amazing with any kind of interior. From my uni digs in Sheffield to my modern apartment in London. My sister was surprised I still had it after all these years!! Anyhow it finally broke down yesterday after all those years of enjoyment and sentiment, as such my nostalgia forced me to order the exact same one again - which arrived today !! Next day delivery - amazing!! The only thing I have an issue with is that there is no Mathmos branding on the base unit anymore, unlike my old one. This made it stand out as an original and I would get comments from guests about that - but I’m guessing Mathmos probably stopped doing that a long time ago!! It certainly cost more now that it did back in the 90s but if this one lasts another 28 years I seriously can’t complain can I?!! 💜

First time put on not much movement with lava but next time excellent and soon warmed up. Perhaps this was due to me turning bottle in base and screwing cap on better. Now it is extremely good. Worth paying extra for. Would recommend

Bought for my husband who has always been mesmerised by these. Lovely colours, good quality. Only comment would be that it does not feel like it sits firmly on the base, I tried moving it around to locate better but does feel if you were to accidentally brush it, it would fall over. I have pushed it into a position where it won’t get knocked

We decided to buy a Mathmos to get the best and safest quality for our daughter's room. We were not disappointed. Arrived really well packaged, good quality and is so pretty. Would definitely recommend.
