Excellent introduction to chemistry
I came across the first edition of this book in my college library, which left me completely awe struck. It is an amazing introductory text for anyone embarking on the study of chemistry and is as appropriate for the passionate and/or precocious school child as well as a first year chemistry student, in spite of newer or "more appropriate" (suggested) chemistry text books available today. General Chemistry starts from the basics: how we understand matter and energy - and as such is readable for people who have no background in science whatsoever. Moreover, it does not present facts, but builds on theories and hypotheses requiring readers to think critically and encourages them to put things together. I see the age of this book as a distinct advantage as it was written when many ground-breaking theories were being propounded and tested, so the logic that went into this process is presented in this book, making it very exciting to read. That said, it is quite a challenging book which covers quantum theory, thermodynamics and biochemistry. It may not be very useful in scoring marks in an examination, but is an invaluable aid to anyone who is passionate about chemistry, biochemistry or physics and actually wants to understand the subject. I wish I had discovered it in Std. IX!
