Good information for thyroid issues
Got this for my sister who is having severe thyroid issues. She told me it helped her understand what was going on with her and helped her have a more in-depth conversation with her doctor. She was able to ask the doctor pointed questions based on the information from this book. It was not too heady and easy to understand for a non-medical person. She was very happy to have this book.

Dated and take the information with a grain of salt. Good for learning basic
I got diagnosed with hypothyroidism knowing very little about it. I’m a 64 year old male that for the last 3 years been complaining to anyone that would listen about my fatigue , my insomnia, anxiety and numerous other effects including why I am a runner and I gained weight.Folks is my freaking thyroid. So being the obsessive type I am reading everything on thyroid. This book, Medical Medium by Anthony Williams and Elle Russ book, The Paleo Thyroid Solution.I wanted a dummies book so I can learn the fundamentals and when I heard about this one I was excited. However, I was disappointed because I feel the explanations was not simple and I like analogy or examples like the thyroid is a train depot and different trains leave the station-T3 and T4 are two trains. Also, the book was written in 2006 so the information is old, very old. . So my purpose was to get the basics and that I got barely. My favorite parts, finding a doctor, make sure you see a specialist, use Major medical center and Pubmed website and Drrubbin.org website to keep up with the latest. And last, to find out if you medication has averse reaction to other medica- the pharmacy is the best to to inquire because they have a software specifically to answer this question.

Old school advice
Wow, I bought this book based on the 100% 5 star reviews. But it was a big dissappointment. To the authors credit, there is a very good overview of both hypothyroid and hyperthyroid disease from an old school MD.But Dr. Rubin's view is so entirely one sided, that he offers no mention of the other side of this highly controversial disease. This is outright dangerous. On P306 he says, "A good physician bases his or her treatment on evidenced-based medicine". So he is relying on TSH level to diagnose the amount of drug to give you. But any internet search will uncover millions of testimonials of people on synthroid with healthy TSH levels that continue to have hypothyroid symptoms. He completely discounts how the patient actually feels.Further, there is no mention of Armour thyroid in this 353 page book! This has been a more reliable and effective treatment for hypothyroid than the Synthroid most MD's recommend. It contains T3 AND T4, both important for most hypothyroid patients. I could understand making a case for Synthroid - maybe even a chapter comparing the pro's and con's of the two - but to not even mention it when many doctors are having success with this treatment is down right dangerous! So this is a good book to give "dummies" (no offense) since there are many valuable topics of interest. I will keep this as a reference on my shelf as well. But please do NOT make this your only book. Do a search on "armour thyroid" and find a plethora of alternative viewpoints.

Buy the paperback
Really difficult to read and navigate on kIndle. Wish I'd bought the paperback version as would have been easier to flick back and forth to pages I want to refer to.

Good reference
I like this book as you can refer to it at home if you require advice. Although it is probably more efficient for US sufferers as alot of the information is US related but overall a good book.
