Shapton Stones are Magical
I've used oilstones, waterstones, Arkansas stones, diamond stones, India stones, etc throughout my life, but the Shapton stones outshine them all. They're ceramic with even, precisely controlled grits. When sharpening, I can see the steel coming off the knife and hear as well as see if my angle is correct. They cut fast and are an immense pleasure to use. I took to them immediately because it was a wholly new sharpening experience for me.

Great stone, almost too good for kitchen use
Sharpening stone was perfectly flat out of the box. Very smooth feel. It cuts fairly quickly, I love the fact that no pre-soaking needed. I was able to refine the edges of my kitchen knives to the point where they were able to shave arm hair. This stone (4000 grit) is almost overkill for knives doing standard kitchen duty. The only con is stone is very low. My stone holder is barely able to hold it. I wish the manufacturer would double the thickness of the acrylic base.

I am extremely satisfied.
Saved money over buying the Naniwa Diamond Whetstone 3000, which I was originally shopping for. This works amazing and delivers results so I am glad I bought this instead. Stone is white so you can easily see the shaving off of the the knife metal. Yes, I would buy it again.

Pricier but it will last for ya.
Pricier but it will last a lot longer. I'm a sushi chef and we sharpen our knives quite often. I bought 2 so far. The first one last me and my crews about 2 years .

Great stones these are!
I am not an expert at sharpening, am just learning. I have the 1k, this one (4k), and the 16k. Used on a harder steel knife recently (I added an 8k in between the 4 and 16 and stropped with compound / polished with leather after). Cut beautifully, feels great, makes razor sharp edges. I like these a lot and plan to gt the 8k to replace my other 8k shapton.

I like it!
Fast & easy use if you have good technique. Like other SG stones- very little feedback-thus the need for skill. Great stone to finish my workhorse knives on. Lost a star due to height- not sure about longevity yet-but prob fine.

Shapton ceramic stones are the BEST sharpening tool in my shop!
This 4000-grit Shapton stone is the perfect intermediary between my diamond stones and my 8000-grit Shapton. Because I work with micro bevels on all my plane and chisel irons, this stone gets me from mild scratches to shiny-sharp and smooth in about 30 seconds. Follow up with 10 - 20 seconds on the 8000 stone, and my tools are mirror perfect and crazy sharp. I never touch my Matsumura chisels with a machine-based sharpener! One minute per iron with Shapton ceramic stones and I’m ready to go to work!

Fantastic product, less useful to most
All of Shapton's products - the glass stones, the pro/ Kuromaku line and the accessories are excellent products you can purchase without any doubts. This stone is a bit of curiosity - it lies right between sharpening (800-3000Grit) and polishing stones(5000+). As such this product is somewhat unnecessary for most people, including myself. A particular Japanese knife of mine really shines at the 4000Grit. If you're going for a single stone purchase look at the 2000 gritstone from Shapton. For multiple stones you can't go wrong with a 1000 and 6000 combination.

Excellent but expensive

Very fine grit stones.
Could use this stone for final polishing if so intended.Good mirror edge if you know how. I think many people's normal usage would suffice with this stone!
