New York Splendor: The City's Most Memorable Rooms

I live in South Africa and received ‘New York Splendor : The City’s Most Memorable Rooms’, today. My excitement soon turned into displeasure and annoyance, at receiving an unsealed second-hand copy, instead of a brand new book - for which I had paid. The spine of the book is ‘used’, what with marks on pages - evidence that it surrendered itself to someone who did not appreciate its allure and brilliance, as I do. Nonetheless, I will keep it - far too much inconvenience to return. That said : It’s a superb edition to my ever-increasing reference library. I am inspired by its contents, photography, composition and the showcase of designers work. As I’ve been ordering quite a number of books from Amazon, please ensure it does not happen again - I never purchase second-hand books.

Beautiful pictures on each and every page - I don't look through books of this kind for inspiration and tips to apply to my everyday mundane life - I look through books like this to be transported to the land of the rich - and what a journey it is! Loved everything about it -

There's a reason they call them coffee table books. They are built to be big and beautiful so that they can be pored over again and again, and this one reminds us how important such books are. Fantastic work. Required for anyone who loves New York and/or good design.

Yes, the information here is superb and speaks to the people who commissioned and designed a remarkable number of New York homes, and that is most welcome. An ever bigger treasure are the images for their composition, lighting, and subjects. A visiting friend, who is about to move to a new apartment, got lost in it, as images of her own future splendor danced in her head. Just a pleasure of a book.

Very disconnected- seemed like a collection of a lot of stuff that half made no sense being there- others were boring and when something was interesting there were not enough images. Tired of these ridiculous books that try and get as many designers as possible into one book with seemingly no clear vision.

Huge book filled with beautiful photography. Compilation of many different designers and architects featured. Good mix of design styles as well. Pure eye candy!

If you have ever wondered what you could do with your home had you money enough and access to top notch designers and architects, this book offers photos and thoughtful discussions of what others have done in New York City. Wide range of styles. Worth every dollar.

My husband and I did not love this book. To me it seemed somewhat commercial, like a series of glossy advertisements for various design firms promoting their latest high profile project. There are some iconic rooms, but somehow they get lost a bit in all the puffery. The content is a mixture of private residences and commercial properties, but the fact that it is arranged by design firms, without even necessarily naming the clients, makes it even more impersonal (to me). When I see a house pictured in a book, I want to know whose house it is, in New York, preferably someone creative and artistic, or rich in a way to capture the visual imagination, eccentric or flamboyant, or guided by some specific aesthetic taste or interest and uniquely equipped to indulge it. Not just anyone who could write a check.For glimpses into more personalized New York decorating styles, I suggest any of these books: New York Apartments Private Views (Gregory), New York Trends and Traditions (Rayner), Remarkable Private New York Residences (Irvine).
