Will this work on a wood stove insert that has approximately 4" top?

as long as you can set it up on the top of the device it will work. We have it on top of our wood stove and it has made such a big difference in heating the whole house. We love it..

Will this fan work with a woodstove insert, as opposed to a free-standing one?

Probably not. The fan works by warming up on top of a free standing stove. When it heats to a certain temp, the blades rotate. An insert would have no way to heat the fan up, thus no blades rotation.

What are the dimensions...more specifically how tall is it? I know there are small and large fans...which one is this? Thanks

It's about 10 inches tall and 9 1/2 inches wide. That width obviously includes the fan blades. I'm not sure if it is the large or small fan. All I know is that it warms approximately 700 square feet of living space fairly quickly.

What's the difference between this one and similar ~$30 fans?

I bought a cheap one made in China and the fan blades would never get spinning fast. They barely moved. Returned it for an Ecofan. I have now been using 2 of these Ecofans for 5 plus years and they're great.
