Just plug it into any wall outlet. It generates a small but harmless amount of heat. "Recharging" is an imprecise term. What you are doing is actually heating up the device with a small internal heating element, which dries out the silica dessicant inside the frame, which, when "charged" or more correctly redried, allows the silica dessicant to again absorb moisture at a higher rate. When the Dessicant has lost its blue color, it absorbes moisture at a less efficient rate. The blue is restored by flipping up the outlet tabs on the back of the unit, and plugging it into the wall to engage the heating element. This product is made for small spaces, not to dehumidify your house. Main use is for gun safes, tool boxes etc.

I get a lot of moisture around my windows in the winter, would this help if I put it on the window ledge?

I agree with Gina. In my case, I had a lot of moisture with my old, single-pane windows and, come to find out, my furnace had an automatic humidifier on it so I shut that off and now use other, less "wet" methods for humidifying only the areas in use, in the winter. So, moisture around the windows lets me know that I'm humidifying too much.

I was thinking of putting these inside an air duct to prevent mold. Does the back need to have open access to air?

Silica gel is a granular, vitreous, porous form of silicon dioxide made synthetically from sodium silicateworks by the adsorbtion of water in the air clinging to the silica gel's surface. It can only adsorb moisture from the air it comes in contact with. You won't see these beads become swollen and soggy; they can't grab and hold that much water. I believe the weight ratio of gel to the amount of water it can hold is about 40 to 1. So 40 grams of gel could hold onto about a gram of water. Silica gel works best in high humidity and poorly at low humidity.

Perfect for small spaces

I have been using it for 3 years and it still works very well. I put it in an almost airtight plastic box along with my camera and lenses and it keep my equipment dry and safe from fungus. Very important in the tropical area where I live. I have to plug it just once a month to dry it. Super

Good investment

I have been using this for a while now and it seems to be effective. It takes around 24 hours for the crystals to regain dryness and turn orange, and it lasts about a fortnight— that might depend on the moisture one is is exposing it to. A good even if expensive investment.
