desertcart.com: THIRDREALITY Smart Soil Moisture Sensor Gen2 3Pack,Zigbee hub Needed, nhanced Signal Stability,Capacitive Moisture Monitoring,Garden Planting, Compatible with Hubitat,SmartThings,Home Assistant,Homey : Patio, Lawn & Garden Review: Gen2 has better connectivity but Gen1 has better temperature accuracy - I have both Gen1 and Gen2 of these sensors. The Gen1 are terrible when it comes to connectivity, they don't stay connected unless they are next to the hub. Gen2 are a MAJOR UPGRADE their connection range is significantly better and much more stable. I have 6 Gen2 and none of them have disconnected since I set them up. The 10 Gen1 sensors I have need daily resets on any that are not within 10 feet of the the hub. That being said, the numbers reported by the Gen1 seem more accurate. On a 90° day the Gen1's all reported something around 90° while the Gen2's all reported around 110°. They do have an offset but not that big. The soil moisture numbers all seem about accurate. Since I'm using them to trigger my watering system I just use a threshold number that it needs to be below. They serve my purposes but know they are not perfect, but for the price they are good enough. Review: Works great with homeassistant - Worked well, seems very accurate and I was able to integrate with home assistant without trouble. I was doing yard work and broke it by stepped on it , need to buy another one. It worked perfectly well before I broke it. Highly recommend if someone looking for a sprinkler automation.

Connects easily, limited function with SmartLife, won't work w Alexa
I got this soil moisture meter to help me monitor some of my houseplants, especially as I begin to move them from their indoor winter spots to their outdoor spots. The sensor was super easy to connect. I'm using a generic Zigbee hub connected through the SmartLife app. It connected immediately once I pulled the battery tab. As someone else mentioned, I needed to immediately replace the AA battery, as the one that was included was almost dead. Once connected, I explored the interface in SmartLife and was a little disappointed. I noticed that SmartLife is not listed for this device, so I'll cut some slack here, but every other Zigbee device I've used works with it. The issues I'm experiencing are that there is no way to change the temperature reading to F° on the main device page, and the battery status button does not work at all. The temp on the tile in the SmartLife home page shows F°, but not on the device page (see photo). I've gone through every setting available. Not a huge deal, but slightly annoying. A nice feature in the app is the historical readings chart (pictured). I have an Alexa echo device that has a built-in Zigbee bridge, but this device did not work with it. It will connect, but the device page only shows temperature and not humidity/soil moisture so it's effectively useless. The product page claims it works with Echo devices with Zigbee so this is more of an issue for me, and it's the reason I'm giving 4 stars. Otherwise it works. I ran into a little issue with getting low readings, but after some experiments I realized I need to compact the soil around the sensor a bit, especially for loose, chunky soil like I have in my palm plants. I tried the initial calibration method another reviewer suggested, and I'm not sure whether it did anything or not, but I was only able to get 96% as my highest reading when submersed in a glass of water. I did get it to zero when dry.

Works great
Seems to be working great but have never used a sensor like this and dont have anything to compare it to. It did lose its connection once to the network, but I reconnected it and it’s been fine since I have this set with a sprinkler to turn on automatically when it reaches a low moisture level and it’s working great.

The ones that work, work great
One showed up DOA. Tried a new battery but it refuses to work.

Similar to the old version
This connects just like the old version in Home Assistant. The only obvious difference is that it reports Soil Moisture in addition to Humidity. Except the two numbers are the same. The reported humidity/moisture and temperature values are very close to values reported by the old version.

Half works
Outside temp didn't work I return

shorter probe is better for seed trays
the shorter probe length on this version is a much better fit for using in seed trays than the gen1. measurements are accurate and connection is solid.

Brilliant sensor. Paired instantly with Home Assistant via ZHA, battery life looks great with the single AA, and the readings are consistent and reliable. Build quality feels solid and the weatherproof casing gives confidence leaving it outdoors permanently. The capacitive probe is a real step up from cheaper resistive sensors — no corrosion concerns and the readings don't drift over time. One thing worth noting if you're using these for lawn seeding or germination monitoring: the probe measures soil moisture at depth, below where your seed is sitting. During the critical early germination window, the surface can be bone dry and your seed dying while the sensor is still reading 50%+ because the soil 50-100mm down is perfectly moist. I learned this the hard way — lost most of my first seeding attempt on an exposed site because the sensors said the moisture was fine while the surface was drying out in the wind. For established lawns, borders, and pots these are perfect. For new seed germination, treat the readings as a guide to what's happening below the surface and still check the top 10mm by hand or eye until the grass is rooted in. Five stars because the sensor does exactly what it's designed to do — just understand what it's actually measuring.

Seems good quality wise. Works with Zigbee2MQTT, Home Assistant. It paired without any issues, reporting regularly.

Very hard to connect to network with a lot of communication. It only connects ok on networks with less traffic.
