Frankenstein: The Graphic Novel (American English, Original Text)

Well done! Makes me want to read the prose novel.
I have never read Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein". I have seen several Frankenstein movies. This graphic novel is as good, if not better than the best film version that I've seen("Mary Shelley's Frankenstein").I have been interested in classic literature and graphic novels since I was a teen. So, when I saw that a company named Classical Comics was making literary classics into graphic novels, I was ecstatic! I own several graphic novel adaptations of classic works of literature. Not all of them are from Classical Comics; some of them are from Marvel. But "Frankenstein" is the first one I purchased from Classical Comics. And I wasn't disappointed. This book has everything you could want in a graphic novel. It has excellent writing(much of which is taken directly from the original prose novel, which makes you feel like you're reading the original work, adding to the older gothic feel of the story instead of coming off as some modern reimagining). The artwork is top-notch, capturing the mood of the story brilliantly. And the story itself is both very entertaining and full of themes that force you to think about the human condition. The idea and feeling of acceptance is one of the themes that is most powerful, in my opinion. All in all, if you are a fan of classic literature, gothic horror/romanticism, graphic novels, or all three - you should check this one out. And check out the other classic literature graphic novel adaptations that are out there. There are some really great reads. Classical Comics' "A Christmas Carol" is excellent. And Marvel has a line of classic works, such as the "Oz" series of books by L. Frank Baum, and "Pride and Prejudice" just to name a few. Also I have to add here that Marvel also has an adaptation of Bram Stoker's "Dracula" that has to be the best graphic novel adaptation of that story ever done. It's the only adaptation I've ever read, but I've read the original prose novel and Marvel's version is so faithful to it that I am skeptical that any other graphic novel could do a better job. Although, Classical Comics is releasing their version of "Dracula" in February of 2012. So I will definitely be getting that, and may then have to eat my words. We'll see. This is a great introduction to classic literature. Do yourself a favor and buy it. It's money well spent.

A Flawless Adaptation
Shelley's novel was a classic from the day it was published. This graphic novel continues that tradition. Excellently abridged using Shelley's actual language is outstanding. I was delighted with this adaptation. Fine for just about all ages, this older reader had just as much fun as a thirteen-year old. The artwork is first-class and the lettering a pleasure to the eye. The after material giving the history of Mary Shelley, her family, the reception of the novel, and the construction of the graphic novel are all informative and enjoyable. A worthy addition to any library.

Great book for review of material
I am studying "Frankenstein" in a college Eng 1B class and our final paper is based on the book worth 30% of our grade. The importance of the material makes me want to reread the book but as I'm in a time crunch I cannot. I ordered this book and it has all the characters, no absences of scenes or absent plot points so this is great for the analytical approach I'm taking. We have to explicate the paper and I can use this book to pinpoint the pages in the book and find the quotes I will use. Plus this book has some extra small essays in the back that are of use in my thesis and outline. I would say this book also has the best artwork and translation of the three I bought from Amazon. This is a valuable addition to my studies and I recommend it to any person that needs a condensed version of the story. You can just look through the pages quickly and find the section from the pictures instead of reading anything. A great read for serious critical thinkers.

I've never read the original, but this was great
This was a pretty engaging graphic novel. I grabbed it as part of a college assignment. As someone who has never read the original story, I still thought this was an interesting tragic tale that was worth reading through. It's rather interesting how different this version of Frankenstein's monster is from the typical pop culture view of him: he is well-spoken and cunning, for instance. He is also a tragic character, someone who could have been a good person if not for the way every civilization he went to found ways to hurt him. Its not framed as something to justify the terrible things he did, though, such as how he killed innocent relatives and associates of Frankenstein merely to spite his creator. Instead, his upbringing is used merely to give context as to how he became the monster everyone framed him as. Its rather intriguing to see his quest for revenge juxtaposed with the immense anxiety Frankenstein feels for what he has done. The art is really nice, as well. There's a certain grittiness that felt right for this kind of story.

Awesome
We have a son who learns visually. He struggles with reading comprehension and so graphic novels are his book of choice. He is fortunate to have a high school English teacher who lets him read the graphic novels instead of just reading text. He absolutely loved Frankenstein. This graphic novel follows the book well enough and the pictures are terrific. His teacher allowed him to use the graphic novel as reference for his paper as well. I am so grateful to find classic novels done in graphic form. It has been a life changer for our son's school experiences.

Damaged
The media could not be loaded. I’m disappointed that this graphic novel was sent to me like this. The corner pages are folded. Haven’t opened it yet. I’m sure it will be a better review after I read it

perfect
An excellent visual adaptation to the original story, this graphic novel really brings the story to life, it has excellent artwork if you are like me and you like your gothic stories then this is one for your collection, if I go in to more detail about the story it might ruin your expectations all I can say is get this novel and you will not regret it.
