Is the black rubber piece supposed to be wet or oily in the package?

I think it may have some silicone spray on the rubber to keep it from sticking to the packaging. As long as the filter media is dry you shouldn't have any problems.

Why does Amazon tell me this will not fit my 2012 mustang (5.0L) when the model number matches Ford's database for this filter?

It told me the same thing for my 2013 v6 mustang and I ordered it anyway...it fit just fine. Suggest go with what Ford says...Amazon database likely in error.
