Welcome to Weaving: The Modern Guide

Perfect for an absolute beginner
I decided 2019 I would learn to weave on a simple lap-loom. This book starts with the VERY fundamental basics - the first few pages describing the terminologies such was warp, weft, and the tools that are needed - then in a very sensible manner, begins with the fundamental weaves - with easy-to follow steps, and pictures that break down each and every step. Then once the very basic weaving patterns have been established it moves onto binding your work together, and then onto projects that can be made with the various weaves. It does take patience, but this is a brilliant book for anyone who (like me!) wants to learn basic loom weaving or improve their fundamental skills.

Interesting book
I found this book interesting and detailed, the projects seemed more decorative then useful, hence 4 stars and not 5! but great ideas. When my mum died I actually found my old children's loom and I am so glad that I kept it, I will certainly give weaving a try now.Thank you

Beautiful contemporary book
This book is a thing of beauty. I have always wanted to try weaving and this book has inspired me to have a go. I really loved the minimalist projects as opposed to other more colourful ones I have seen. The book covers a wide variety of topics from how to build your first loom, materials explored and projects that will appeal to all skill levels. A beautiful book worthy of a space on your coffee table ready to dip in and out of when your creativity urge beckons.Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for my chance to read this inspirational book .

Great Instructions, and Beautiful Book! Already bought the second one!
Great book! I would say if you've never ever ever heard of weaving or watched any videos, I don't know that you would be able to follow necessarily, but come on people, we all know when someone is interested in something they start research and watching instructional videos way before they buy a book over it. Do your part and while your supplies and book are on their way, look at terminology, join Lindsey Campbell's Facebook group and look at the community to learn terms and techniques, watch some videos on YouTube. The book is definitely helpful, and very inspiring. I've never weaved before, just seen others do it. And you can see I'm getting it down pretty easily! I finished reading this book while I was waiting on my Beka Deluxe loom to arrive. And I ended up going ahead and buying her second book too! They make a great conversation piece for your coffee table too, they don't stick out weird, they are well made books! And highest praises to Lindsey and her team because usually when you buy a hardcover book (Say.....Homebody by Joanna Gaines) you think the photo printing you see online is going to be the actual hardcover, then you get it and realize it's a book sleeve. This is a huge pet peeves of mine. Luckily Homebody was a beautiful book without the sleeve. But I didn't have to worry about that with this book, it has no annoying and useless sleeve and I love it!!!

Putting fun back into learning!
There are a lot of new weaving books available now that show the basics of weaving, but leave the novice weaver completely out of their depth if they want to take their crafting skills further. They are also way behind this book in what they do teach. Lindsay Campbell, of Hello Hydrangea fame, does not teach traditional tapestry weaving the way it was taught 20 years years ago, or even now in many of the Guilds around the world, but what she does do, and very well, is give a good grounding on learning how to let your fingers do the walking, and how to use cartoons and a simple loom to create attractive home furnishings and other useful and fashionable items, and lets you expand your skills so you are ready to stretch your talents further. If you have already started learning on a rigid heddle loom or a shafted loom, you may well find techniques in this book that you can use on your current looms as well as making a simple frame loom to enhance your tapestry skills, not always covered in beginner weaving books for those looms. This is the first of two volumes, I have the second on order, and its a thorough introduction to tapestry, but not tapestry weaving as your grandmother would have learned. Yes, there are exercises to get your fingers and brain used to weaving, only they are called projects to keep your interest and have a much better purpose than turning out a length of a sampler that you are supposed to store in case you ever need to use those techniques again, because you do need to practice if you want to learn, but this is much more fun that the older books make them out to be.This will not teach you to Guild standard, but if you want to find a weaving teacher or group, you will find it very easy to pick up what they teach as you will have learned more than the basics in this book Ms Campbell has not reinvented the wheel, but she has brought it up to date and made it much more interesting for people who have been brought up with instant gratification as the norm. The projects in this book are in the main interesting and useful, employ the use of the latest yarns and fibres and designs, and help the novice weaver feel that they are not only learning, but achieving something. The book is well illustrated with plenty of coloured photos showing details of what you are meant to be doing, and some of this can also be found on her website if you read her blog. Its not a cheap book, none of them are, but its certainly one of the best around and the contents cover a great deal, making it value for money, and a useful start to anyone's weaving library. If you want to learn a hobby that will make beautiful things, stretch your imagination, and feed your desire to create, you definitely should consider this book!
