Keep Going: 10 Ways to Stay Creative in Good Times and Bad (Austin Kleon) Review: A timeless book both from the heart and for the heart - I’ve read Austin Kleon’s other two books, Show Your Work! and Steal Like an Artist, both of which offer advice on how to unlock your creativity and help you to get your work out into the world. In this book aimed at writers, artists, and creatives of all types, the author offers tips, tricks, and techniques on how to stay creative during good times and bad. Though this is just a short book, it is an inspirational one, and it contains an incredible amount of wisdom and depth in its pages. The book is peppered with relevant quotes, humor, chuckle-worthy illustrations, black-out poetry, advice from other creatives and inspiring stories that made me get excited all over again about the projects I’m currently working on. But more than that, this is also a practical book on how to live a good and satisfying life despite the chaos that sometimes surrounds us. Though this is a fast read — I think I read it through the first time in less than two hours — this isn’t the kind of book you place back on your shelf when you’re finished and forget about it. Like his other books, you’ll want to have it close at hand so that it’s within easy reach to refer back to often. I now have it on my desk with his other two books, and I have little doubt that I’ll be turning to it often. I think this would be an excellent motivating book to refer to when going through rough patches — those times in your life when success seems too far off to reach for or when you’re feeling lost or jaded. This might be just the book to pull you out of a slump. All in all, Keep Going is a timeless book both from the heart and for the heart, and I highly recommend it. Review: I’d buy it at twice the price - Great book and very inspiring. Buying all parts of the series.

Good For What Ails Ya
Here is a handy compilation of quotes, anecdotes and guidance condensed from the author's experience, observation and research. The aim is to spur the creative individual on to perseverance and sustainability in their practice. Approximately half of the book consists of full page illustrations (mostly in the form of blackout poetry) as well as quotes (in call out boxes and interspersed liberally throughout the writing). One might consider this a drawback; however, the actual words-to-read are fairly succinct and are rarely wasted. Here you will find a fine blend of realistic and optimistic; practical and ideal. Surely some parts felt cliché but I strongly suspect that if I were to reread this book in 3 months or next year or whenever (which I bet I will!) those formerly cliché bits will present as profound. I can ignore platitudes whilst mining for gems. By the way- there is certainly a Creative Pep Talk Podcast vibe to this joint- a fair amount of philosophy as well as some great book recommendations. Its simply not as- peppy. And that’s ok. Yes, I do recommend it. Golly, you might even buy two of them and use the verso/recto pages as wallpaper to surround yourself with good advice, ideals and encouragement.

Must Read for Creatives
This book is a high recommendation for anyone who struggles with developing a clearer view when it comes to their craft. Offers a fresh perspective on approach and has even assisted me with invigorating new ideas and limited creative fatigue. This book was recommended to me, and I now do the same for you.

This book is 15 by 15 cm. The language is easy to understand and the presentation is ingeniously engaging. I read all 3 of his books in the local library but decided that this was the one I needed most. I keep this book permanently on my art table. There are many challenges facing an artist, most of which stem from not having another human being nearby to share the journey. It is so easy to give up one’s craft and go back to something else that seems easier. I have found that this book helps me especially on days when I feel frustrated with my art. It’s like having a good friend to share one’s artistic journey. Along with the 10 ways, Austin Kleon shares several anecdotes from others and his own insights on the creative journey. Other reviewers have already elaborated on the content so I’ll refrain from doing so. It is a great little book, especially if you’re an artist, new or experienced.

I read this book each day while taking an Epson salt bath and listening to Zen music. I couldn't wait to jump out of the bath with creative insights about my own creative journey bouncing off my right brain-left. brain. Simple but not simplistic. Clear, easy and insightful. Highly recommended. The way the author ties creativity to the vulnerability inherent in the marathon of the creator was moving while being consistently actionable.
