Black Cross Greg Iles
A good read,a big shift from the Natchez series but an enjoyable thriller within a WW2 setting, I like Mr Iles books and look forward to the next one

Couldn't put it down
This book was just brilliant. Really evocative, didn't expect it from an American writer writing about WW2. Thought the plot was well conceived, tension maintained from start to finish. Did find the fact that so many names began with S and were very short confusing - you'd think an author would know we recognise words, we don't really read them. My dad is a retired GP and told me that a lot of medicine is based on these hideous experiments, an uncomfortable fact, a subject Len Deighton also visits in Bomber(?). Have often wondered why gas wasn't used in WW2, here is a plausible reason. Another great from Greg Iles, now about to re-read the Penn Cage series and looking forward to the latter ones which I haven't read yet (was waiting for the final one). More sleepless nights....

I am a huge Greg iles fan and a huge ...
I am a huge Greg iles fan and a huge ww2 geek. so I was excited to read this book. it didn't let me down! although it had some historical inaccuracies I continued on, as it is fiction not non-fiction. (the author also states this at the end of the book!)the plot was complex and written well, with real emotion.

Brilliant and compulsive
Another riveting read from Greg Iles. Having completed the Penn Cage series, which I loved, I tried Black Cross, not expecting to like it as much as I'm not really into war fiction, but it was every bit as brilliant and compulsive. Although a work for fiction with regard to characters, plot and action, the book is based around elements of truth with respect to the very real potential for and catastrophic effects of chemical warfare and, from that perspective it makes for a frightening read. As with all the other Greg Iles books I have read so far, Black Cross has a great plot, excellent characters and no shortage of nerve-wracking action.

A great read
A very good read that kept me enthralled right to the ending, a good ending as well with a story.

Wow! Wow! Wow!
A rollercoaster of emotions. I liked characters I can believe in but also showing that real people are not one dimensional. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a good story. I would have given it more stars if I could.

OK
The book is OK. It took to long to take off.72% read and the story then began to pick up with the action. I wanted to finish it because i invested to much time in it and wanted to get my 'monies' worth. When the story did pick up, i did find myself wanting to read on and find out what happened next.

Way below par
I enjoyed the Natchez trilogy so was looking forward to this, but was disappointed. The plot was very far fetched I thought and was strewn with historical inaccuracies. Four men flying from Achnacarry to visit Churchill in a Lysander for example. A Lysander had room for two.The wife of the U Boat captain who knew her husbands sub was operating in the Gulf of Mexico. U boat skippers did not know their area of operations until they had left port. Apart from the factual mistakes, the story was filled with implausible scenarios such as the vehicle ferry on which they make their escape. They drive on and away they go as if starting the engines of a ferry is like starting a car. I know it is fiction, but the reader must be able to suspend disbelief and I was unable to
