Tomie DePaola's Book of Bible Stories Paperback – February 18, 2002

DePaola’s illustrations are peerless—they are my favorite so far. Be aware that the bible stories included in this collection have not been reworded in child-facing language, so as beautiful as the pictures are this may not be a suitable gift for small children or youngsters with language delays.

I bought this book to help me teach children's church. The kids like the pictures and the way the stories are written. I do too. Tommy is a favorite of mine. Our children's church is for kids from baby to first grade.

Great author and illustrations are fantastic. I like the size and sturdiness of the book. It is for an older child tho. I bought it for my 4 year old but saving for when she is older. It is written in the King James style so the 4 year old’s attention span and understanding isn’t there yet.

I have always loved Tomie DePaola's books. His illustrations are timeless and unique, full of vibrant colors and inviting faces. When I discovered his Book of Bible Stories I had to purchase it for my son (and maybe a little for myself!) The stories cover both the Old and New Testament.The stories are simple enough for young children to follow, but aren't so watered down as to miss the point, and there isn't extraneous language that detracts from the original scripture.The real treat here are the illustrations, which are a delight to the eyes of children and adults alike. I enjoy reading this often and I think it should be a staple in any child's library.

Excellent book. Perfect gift for a 7 year old to read on her own. Gave this to a first grader receiving sacraments and she loves to read the stories on her own.

This book contains Tomie DePaola's signature artwork with text directly from the Bible. I like that the stories are the actual biblical text (RSV translation, I believe). While I have read some children's Bibles that have done a good job of adapting the text for younger readers (e.g. The Golden Children's Bible), more often than not the process of adaptation involves, intentionally or not, some twisting of the story or biasing towards a particular theological viewpoint.

Absolutely beautiful illustrations. Perfect book of Bible stories for young children. Would definitely purchase again.

Wonderful book to introduce religion to your young family. We have one daughter age 5. Arrived quickly and in great shape.

The only reason I only gave this 4 stars is although it is a wonderful quality book with beautiful pictures, the childish illustrations and cover lead one to believe it is a children's Bible storybook, ie key stories retold in child-friendly language, whereas it is actually an abridged NIV Bible word for word, and so lots of dense text and not always suitable for younger children to understand. I would simplify it a lot and just retell the key events myself from memory when reading to younger children. However, if you are a purist and believe children should hear the undiluted Word of God (and so they should, but perhaps after the age they will understand it!) this is the book for you.

これは有名な絵本作家トミー・デパオラの英語の聖書物語です。「英語はちょっと！」と思われる方も手元に日本語聖書が一冊あれば、この本を読み進めることができます。というのは、この本書の文章には英語の聖書（NIV）がそのまま使われているからです。巻末のインデックスを見ながら日本語聖書を開けばよいのです。ちなみにNIVはアメリカの福音教会でよく用いられている聖書です。　おはなしは全部で37。旧約聖書から21、新約聖書から16のおはなしが選ばれていますが、それぞれの場面にトミー・デパオラ独特のシンプルで美しい絵が付けられていますが、それはある場面では、中世の写本を飾る細密画のような趣で、またある場面では見開き両面にまたがるダイナミックな筆致で描かれていて、見る者を聖書の世界へ導きます。　家族みんなで、英語と聖書に親しむというのはいかがでしょう。
