Auto Repair For Dummies, 2 nd Edition (9781119543619) was previously published as Auto Repair For Dummies, 2 nd Edition (9780764599026). While this version features a new Dummies cover and design, the content is the same as the prior release and should not be considered a new or updated product. The top-selling auto repair guide--400,000 copies sold--now extensively reorganized and updated Forty-eight percent of U.S. households perform at least some automobile maintenance on their own, with women now accounting for one third of this $34 billion automotive do-it-yourself market. For new or would-be do-it-yourself mechanics, this illustrated how-to guide has long been a must and now it's even better. A complete reorganization now puts relevant repair and maintenance information directly after each automotive system overview, making it much easier to find hands-on fix-it instructions. Author Deanna Sclar has updated systems and repair information throughout, eliminating discussions of carburetors and adding coverage of hybrid and alternative fuel vehicles. She's also revised schedules for tune-ups and oil changes, included driving tips that can save on maintenance and repair costs, and added new advice on troubleshooting problems and determining when to call in a professional mechanic. For anyone who wants to save money on car repairs and maintenance, this book is the place to start. Deanna Sclar (Long Beach, CA), an acclaimed auto repair expert and consumer advocate, has contributed to the Los Angeles Times and has been interviewed on the Today show, NBC Nightly News, and other television programs. Review: Basic car mechanics - I found this very helpful, maybe defunked for those with electric cars, but still an interesting book to read. Review: Wealth of knowledge - First off this book wasn't for me I'm a fully qualified mechanic and have 25 years experience, I bought it for my brother kind of as a joke because he had recently changed his spark plugs and said "I'm a mechanic now".... I usually fix his and every one else's cars anyway but its also so he could look and do simple things himself if he wanted, when it arrived I had a flick through and was pleasantly surprised at how much information is in here, It doesn't have many pictures but you can easily identify the parts by going into Google, you'd probably be better off getting a haynes manual for your exact car but this is nice to have I guess as it has little hacks in it for when things don't go as planned which is something I've spent years learning out for myself.

A gem of a book
Very well written book, with calm explanation of things that appear complex until someone explains them to you, and sometimes there is no one who could. I would highly recommend this to everyone who just got his / her first car, as it will greatly reduce the stress of having to care about a pleasant, but expensive and fragile thing you've got. One thing I don't like in this book is that it uses imperial units. It's only good for USA, as the rest of the world uses metric system. So, miles per gallon and things like that just make me to get the point, not the fact, and I like getting facts. I would recommend author to get a calculator and create a "World" edition of this book.

'Dummies' win again!
After reading some adverse reports, I am pleasantly surprised how helpful the book is. It is written for the American Market, but 'translates' easily into English, with good explanations and illustrations ... I'd recommend this to any 'petrol-head' who wants a basic knowledge of how the car 'works'. Well done!

A book that has proved its worthseveral times.
I originally purchased this book for myself and other family members when they became car owners. On this occasion, I ordered this book, for a young woman, who is a friend and neighbour, who is fairly unfamiliar with how a motor vehicle is constructed and maintained. This book has proved to be an extremely useful guide for anyone who owns a car and wants to maintain it.

More basic than I was expecting
Good overview of how systems work but in all honesty there’s not much in terms of troubleshooting and processes for repair, it’s a lot of “if you’re having this issue, speak to a professional”.

Really good book!
I brought this for my niece for Christmas and she loves it, it has everything she needs to learn as she is going to college for mechanics next year. Thankfully she saw the funny side and she is very happy with it. A really good buy and a bit of fun at the same time :)

Interesting if you want to know how a car works
I was interested into how a car works and in that it supplies enough information. However, if you want to learn general auto repair like if your handles are not working, or you car door lock is getting stuck, or how to install an autoradio, it will not provide in these simple steps. You cannot however not say the book only handles complex reparation as it even explains how to tank gasoline.

Great Intro for beginners
I had practically zero knowledge about cars and was tired of not understanding what my car was doing what it kept on doing. Now I have a decent understanding about how they work and am able to do some beginner level maintenance. Tinkering with my car is my new hobby now, and its a lot of fun!

Great! Better than expected. It goes deep and gets technical...learning a lot with this book. Good purchase, if you are doubting.
