Rhetorical Devices: A Handbook and Activities for Student Writers

As a teacher and tutor, I find this paperback title "Rhetorical Devices" to be an indispensable tool in helping my students become better writers. It has also been a great aid for students taking AP English class. This compact book contains chapters devoted to each of the 33 rhetorical devices, with definitions and examples of each as well as practice exercises. I own some other books that explain rhetorical devices, but they are a little dense and hard to navigate. This guide is very clear and engaging, with explanations, examples, and practice exercises. I'm planning to use it for mini-lessons in my writing classes.

Rhetorical Devices: A Handbook and Activities For Student Writers is 221 pages in length. This books is concise and is a very useful Kindle ebook. I use it a lot! I teach a combined AP U.S. History and AP Lang & Comp class called American Studies. I have taught the History side of the class for the past eight years, this year I took over the English side as well. I was searching for resources for AP Lang and came across this little book. I bought it and started using the writing strategies in class for the first 30 minutes or so and it has been great. The kids enjoy the activities and they say it is the first time that they have had an English class go into depth into the different rhetorical strategies. Going to require this book next year and use it as a workbook for first semester. Highly recommend.

Not what I expected . Explains device with a example however the exercise not specific in teaching device. The reading are too basic level ones they do not require critical thinking or using evidence to support answers.

Glad I purchased through Amazon, saved myself some money, and got great service, with the book arriving when it said it would. The cover is also great, and the content is very helpful. Rhetorical devices are difficult to master, but this book definitely makes it a lot easier.

The book includes a large set of terms (33 in all). They're broken down individually with definitions, explanations on their use, and then practice activities. The end of the book has a handful of assessments that groups the terms. The book is 224pgs in length. I'm using it with sophomore high school students.

Bought it upon the recommendation of my daughter’s 12th grade English teacher. My daughter has been using it faithfully, without prompting from me. For a teenager to willingly use this as a resource merits a 5 star rating, in this mom’s opinion!

Wish I had read this at university....

As someone working on improving my writing skills, this book was very interesting. I knew and used more techniques than I was aware of, but this book brought my unconscious skills more into conscious practice and intentionality. It also inspired me to try more rhetorical techniques than I would have thought to do on my own, and to go online and look for more resources on the topic.The book is well organized and easy to read, understand and apply. I would have given the book a five-star rating if it covered a wider variety of techniques. Although the ones covered are the most common and likely most useful. Maybe is should get a higher rating. I really have no complaints regarding this book.

Ich verwende dieses Buch im Grundkurs Englisch zur einführenden Erläuterung der stylistic devices.Jedes SD wird mit einem erklärenden Text, Beispielen und Übungen eingeführt. Die Übungen gehen etwas über das hinaus, was am Gymnasium verlangt wird (SD identifizieren), denn stellenweise sollen SD selber ausgedacht werden. Hier kann jeder Lehrer selbst didaktisch kürzen, wenn erforderlich.Besonders witzig: jede Kapitelüberschrift ist bereits ein Beispiel für die jeweilige Stilfigur. So heißt es im Kapitel zur Litotes als Überschrift: What you'll learn in this section isn't bad.Both very nice and useful!
