Children's Favourites 23 Original Hit Recordings From The Classic Radio Show

When my kids, boy and girl, were around 7 or 8 they loved this CD and it went with them on long car journeys - something about the song selection really appealed to them. They listened to it with their portable CD players, and it always went on holiday with them. Not surprising for my daughter as she always liked nursery rhymes, but normally my son wasn't interested in music so much as he preferred TV and gaming, but travelling in the car even he would often listen to it via headphones (while playing his Nintendo DS/Gameboy). The CD got used so much that it became worn out and unplayable, luckily we had ripped it to iTunes so we could still access the tracks.For many years we couldn't find a replacement 'Children's Favourites' CD to buy, but as it was available cheaply again for around a fiver I purchased another 'as new' copy second hand from Zoverstocks, and the CD plays perfectly. I guess as all these songs are by the original artists, there's a variety of interesting voices and all the songs were big hits in their day, they seem to have stood the test of time. The only track they always skip past is "Trains (Parts 1 & 2) by Reginald Gardiner", it does go on a bit - plus they never quite took to 'The Woody Woodpecker song' (he wasn't a fave cartoon character of mine as a boy either). But otherwise, be it 'On The Good Ship Lollipop' by Shirley Temple (1934), Charles Penrose's 'The laughing Policeman' (1926), Arthur Askey's 'Bee Song' (1938), or 'I Tawt I Taw A Puddy Tat' by Mel Blanc (1951), all the other songs have still proved a hit - and we'll give it five. My daughter even got into the Burl Ives "The Big Rock Candy Mountain" song so much, she subsequently bought his CD '  A Little Bitty Tear: The Best Of '. So from our families point of view, this is a very a good audio CD for promoting music with youngsters aged from 5 to 10, and great value at under a fiver. Sound quality is quite good considering the age of some of the tracks. As my daughter and son got older (aged around 10), they moved on to Rolf Harris's The Platinum Collection,  The Very Best Of Bernard Cribbins , Lonnie Donegan's  Rock Island Line - The Singles Anthology  and Charlie Drake's  Hello My Darlings!  music CDs.

Well .. This compilation's a pretty good introduction to the world of the "Baby Boomers". Brilliant value and worth the admission price just to hear "Trains Pts. 1+2" by the excellent Reginald Gardiner. The thing that amuses me, though, is the wonderful diction... so very correct and quaint. And I don't mean that in a derogatory fashion. Just buy this; you won't play it that often.... but when you do, it'll certainly remove some of the everyday worries that we all encounter.
