Such Happy Sorrow.
The Garmin GPS 12 is the perfect GPS for me, I have had one for years and being so familiar with it I could pull up a waypoint with only a couple of glances at the screen while trying to find my way in the dark while driving my boat. To my surprise, when it quit working, the Garmin people quit repairing the GPS 12 and stop manufacturing that model. No other GPS I checked out had the screen setups like the GPS 12 and I looked at a bunch. I did not want to jump from one screen to see my heading to another screen to see where I needed go. When I found this GPS12 I was so relieved. My old one went out in the middle of duck season and with the fast turn around on the purchase I didn't miss a hunt the rest of the season. Thanks for having it available but shame on Garmin for discontinuing a jewel of a device.Franklin Kemp

absurd price
IT really a very good unit I have used one for over 15 years with no problems at all. Now that being said 169 bucks??? are you serious? I picked one up in a pawn shop a couple months ago in like new condition with a power cable for $ 20. This is a very good unit but is obsolete and outdated by more than 10 years for 170 bucks you can get a much better modern unit. I give the Garmin GPS12XL 5 + stars but this deal 0 stars.

Great... A few years ago
I bought this GPS a few years ago. As I work in the Army and my unit never fitted me with a military GPS, I decided to get one of my own. I was amazed then. It helped me out alot when trying to figure out my position. It's usefulness is limited in forests and in blizzards, which often is when you need the most. It was of course useless inside armored vehicles, but that's more than one can expect unless one has an external antenna. The GPS can usualy track your position within two or three minutes, which is pretty fast. However, if you keep it turned on, it will drain your four AA batteries pretty quick.I have always had the philosophy that one should NEVER solely trust a GPS. One should merely use it as a backup for a map and a compass. For this use, the Garmin GPS-12XL is just as good as you'll ever need it to be. However, the extra functions are rather primitive and probably most suited for fishers to mark their good spots.Having said all this, I must add that GARMIN has come out with several newer, better, more advanced and even cheaper GPS's. I recommend buying one of those instead. Think carefully and decide wisely.

Hi-Def GPS, a must for hikers more than 20 miles from anywhere
Seriously, it is not pretty, and can be hard to use at times, because of the meager menu system, but it is almost military grade in accuracy. No other gps I have seen even comes close. Usually I can be spot on or less than 5' off on any coordinates.
