Can more then one person have a house in New Leaf just like in Animal Crossing City Folks?

Yup :) Up to four playable characters and houses, the first person created will be Mayor and the rest will just be villagers :)

I've never played any of the Animal Crossing games before. Do you have to have played the previous games for this one to make sense?

Absolutely not. The story of this game starts your character off completely fresh in your new town and the story of your town is explained thoroughly in the beginning. There are a lot of little secret tricks, however, (such as the money rock) that have continued over from previous games but your animal villagers will hint at them if you talk to them enough (or you can look them up)

what age group would enjoy this game the most

I feel as though age varies with this game (and previous versions). I am 22 and love playing AC, and have since I was 12. All age groups can play given that it doesn't have a difficult story line or controls. I would even venture to say that children as young as 7 or 8 could play AC. Hope this helps a little.

can you play this game on the old Nintendo DSi

More than likely you cannot given that it is meant for a Nintendo 3DS and the actual game card is differently shaped thus making it unable to be played on anything that is not a 3DS or a 2DS.
