Dummy

I enjoyed this movie. It centers on a group of characters, each trapped in his/her own dysfunctional hell. Because of the nature of the film, there are sad notes at times, but ultimately comes to a satisfactory conclusion. It's hard to classify a genre . . . Quirky, dramedy?Although there are some fairly well known actors here, I guess because of it's super limited release (5 screens), the movie didn't make much money. It's a shame, because the movie is good and the acting is excellent. Personally, I think Adrien Brody is an excellent actor who slides into and becomes whichever character he is playing (see him in Midnight in Paris). This role is no different, Brody is outstanding.The film was shot in 2002 the same year as The Pianist, Brody's breakout movie. The Pianist was released in 2002 and Dummy, a year later. Since Brody won an Oscar for The Pianist, I don't understand the lack of exposure this film received. I suppose it's considered a small indie film, and they don't make big bucks.Ultimately, there are moments in the movie which will make you laugh out loud but also cringe at times, just like real life.

I love this movie and truly wish I could punch the lights out (Fangora style) of those who dis it! This indie has so much to offer on a lot of fronts. I've seen it a few times since its release and laugh until my sides ache every time as it's hilarious, but it can take you into some deep territory also. It offers solid and simple Joseph Campbell philosophy for navigating life. Adrien Brody made this film in the same year and shortly after making The Pianist, so we can see the span of his skill as an actor. Vera Farmiga and Mila Jovovich to boot! Glad to see that there are recent viewers for this wonderful movie.

Good movie, good cast

the mother is always hollering up the stairs, do you want blintzes or a sandwich to her son. she interrupts , even if he is on the phone. always OCD with the food, but she doesn't ask her daughter. she thinks she will get fat and all she cares about is the daughter getting married, even to a psychopath, as long as he's an accountant, that's all that matters. the film is a comedy and very well done. we enjoyed this movie.

There are some wonderful performances here, especially from Vera Farmiga, still a vulnerable and comic ingenue in 2003 and from Jessica Walter who is just off enough to deliver a performance that rivals the best offbeat movie moms (think "Mary Hartman Mary Hartman" good!). Dummy is a little uneven in places and you'll get more of the humor if you're Jewish or familiar with Jewish shtick. Overall it is charming, I was laughing out loud at some points. Charming!

This is a simple movie with a pretty simple story made entertaining by some very talented actors. This is one of Adrian Brody's first films and he's great as always. Brody's character is not a cool guy and he's got a crazy family with an even crazier best friend played by Milla Jovovich. Brody does all of the ventriliquism himself and Jovovich does all of her own singing and both are impressive and funny! Jovovich is one of the few supermodels who is actually talented enough to carry herself as an actress (take note Angie Harmon)and she is always a joy to watch. The only downside of this film is the quality of the DVD. The picture is grainy and it's a little distracting. I've got much older movies of much better quality so this copy was disappointing. Otherwise, this is a fun little movie with some very talented people and it's worth having in one's collection.

There is a lot to enjoy about this film but so much of it just does not work and quite frankly falls flat. This is overall a very awkward film and that actually works to its credit however I cannot get behind the relationship aspects. It's what kills a lot of the film for me. Adrian Brodie is nobody's favorite both in this film and in reality and his friendship with Fangora is on its face pretty weird (yet comical) her being a misfit garage rock singer with an attitude problem and poor hygiene while Adrian Brodie plays a socially awkward 28 year old man only given promise by his passion for Ventriloquism. He meets Lorena (a career counselor) and it turns into a forced relationship that would only result in possible jail time if perused in real life. I could not get passed that, however the character of Fangora may be enough to carry this film.

One of my all-time favorite movies--hilarious, and horrifying, if you are a mother (that you might ever be like this one!) Adrian Brody is priceless as the hapless hero, as is Eliana Douglass, and, well, just everybody else in the cast. One of those movies that you have to pull out again, and watch, just for the sheer brilliance of the performances.

A good movie. Some amusing moments, some quirky characters. Enjoyed it. Milla Jovovitch (who really can sing) sang frighteningly. Adrien Brody was a bit irritating at times. And Vera Farmiga has eyes to die for, so I don't know...urr...where was I? Ah, yes - she was ace! Enjoyable film, well worth seeing once.

Excellent

Great independent film

Ein feiner, ruhiger, aber überraschend witziger und vollends gelungener Film über den Mut, sich zu seinen Wünschen und Träumen zu bekennen, und den Versuch, diese schließlich auch umzusetzen. Die Protagonisten sind keine Überflieger, sondern ein schüchterner und gelangweilter Büroangestellter (Adrien Brody), eine erfolglose Punk-Rock-Sängerin (Milla Jovovich), eine alleinerziehende Mutter usw. Der Weg zum persönlichen Glück gestaltet sich für die Hauptpersonen nicht ohne Umwege und Rückschläge. Aber am Ende ist schon allein der Versuch, das Leben nach den eigenen Vorstellungen zu gestalten und die gewohnten Pfade zu verlassen, eine Bereicherung an sich. Dabei hält sich der Film an seine eigene Botschaft und weicht auch selbst sehr erfrischend und unterhaltsam vom Mainstream ab.Fazit: Kurzweil ohne Action, aber mit Humor und viel Atmosphäre. Originelle und glaubwürdige Charaktere. Brilliante Darsteller. Handlung, Musik - stimmt alles.

Ich denke das meiste zu diesem Film wurde schon gesagt und ich kann mich da zu 100% anschließen. Der Film IST sehr gut, unterhaltsam und an den richtigen Stellen witzig ohne gekünstelt zu wirken.Und allein schon um Milla als Fangora zu sehen lohnt es sich mal reinzuschaun.Der eigentliche Grund für diese Rezension ist der, dass es zwei verschiedene Versionen von Dummy gibt.Aufgefallen ist mir das als ich eigentlich die (Internationale)UK Version gekauft und die US Original Version bekommen hab.Die Internationale (also auch die Deutsche) und die US Version sind zwei TOTAL unterschiedliche Filme!Damit mein ich nich nur, dass einige Szenen fehlen oder zusätzlich vorhanden sind sondern der komplette Film ist anders.-komplett neue Szenen-gleiche Szenen mit anderen Texten und Handlungen-andere Reihenfolge der Szenen (Steven kauft z.B. die Puppe schon direkt am Anfang bevor er kündigt)-einige Szenen sind geschnitten dafür andere länger-selbst scheinbar identische Szenen sind anders gespielt und gesprochen, haben einen anderen Kamerawinkel etcdie Zahl der komplett identischen Szenen kann man an einer Hand abzählen. Es ist so als ob der ganze Film zweimal gedreht und von anderen Leuten geschnitten wurde.Damit will ich nun nicht sagen, das die deutsche Version wesentlich schlechter ist, sie ist nur nicht der Film der ursprünglich gedreht wurde.Ich persönlich finde die Originalversion einen Tick besser (deshalb hier nur 4 Sterne) da es einfach mehr auf "Nebenfiguren" eingeht wohingegen in der deutschen Version der Film mehr um Steven herumgebaut ist.Seine Soloszenen sind leicht gekürzt um Platz zu schaffen für mehr Abwechslung. Seine komplette Familie bekommt mehr Tiefe, Michael ist nun echt genial (vor allem am Ende), die kompletten Situationen sind noch absurder und Monologe ziehen sich nicht so.Was indirekt zum eigentlichen Grund führt warum ich die US Version besser finde: Es gibt auch zusätzliche und längere Szenen von Milla, vor allem der Song den sie am Ende singt ist in voller Länge zu sehen (das Ende ist allgemein wesentlich besser geschnitten).So gut wie der Film auch ist, im Original ist er nochmal besser. Wer also die möglichkeit hat an die US(!)Version zu kommen sollte es versuchen. Vor allem, da das gesprochene Englisch wirklich leicht und deutlich zu verstehen ist und auch hört sich das Gefluche von Milla im original halt nochmal wesentlich besser an als auf Deutsch übersetzt.also:Deutsche Version - 4 Sterne, guter Film, empfehlenswert.US Original - 5 Sterne, eine wahre Filmperle im DVD Regal.
