Best description of the situation in Africa....Elite power capture.
Very well written and well researched of the most important issue affecting Africa in the 21st century. Corruption and more gory corruption. As an African I am ashamed that looting Africa through well organized international corporations and the local rulers has been around to go on for so long. What kind of a rigged international system allows this to go on for decades, while the majority of the people languish in poverty, pestilence, war, ignorance, diseases and hunger? The local rulers live a life of debauchery, immune from local prosecution processes, and their wealth, looted from mother Africa pads their nests in Europe and other countries. There is little incentive or capacity to change the system internally. The soldiers and security forces are no more than armed militia for the elites, ruthlessly massacring "enemy tribes" and their rivals. All it takes is for the international organizations to bless this arrangement for the looting to continue.Very well written, and I find myself recommending it to anyone working in Africa trying to understand how to turn the situation around.

A must read for anyone trying to Africa back on track.
A well researched book, easy to read and very entertaining. Some I knew, lots I didn't. I would love Tom Burgis to follow this up with regular updates. A must read for anyone working in Africa.

The Looting Machine is a well written documentation of how oil and minerals are strangling African countries and delaying their development. It is a must read anti-corruption agencies of government, anti-corruption activists, etc.

Interesting, but a bit repetitive after a few chapters
One cannot fault the author for the sickening parade of graft and embezzlement that he describes. Unfortunately, most of the stories he tells were not news to me and after a while they end up being repetitive. The story is however very well told and the authors has clearly done a great deal of detective work investigating them.

Brilliant examination of corruption in Africa
Having seen the poverty in Africa for myself, I am always shocked by the wealth of these nations that flows not to its economy or people but to the pockets of the most corrupt in these countries.A brilliant insight into how the wealth has been taken for the few and not the many.I'm doubtful that the resource rich countries will ever be without such levels of corruption as the greed of those in power remains as strong as ever.

Räuber in Afrika

excellent book about a rather sad topic
It has always been a paradox: Africa is so rich in resources, but always remains poor. Why is that? This book suggests that the richness of resources might actually be feeling or "driving" the corruption which results in some unscrupulous locals and foreignors "looting" most/all benefits, while leaving the local population poor, if not actually destitute.Elsewhere, in TED talks, we are reminded that Africa does not want charity! It merely wants a chance to participate in global commerce and work its way up, like most other (esp. 1st world) countries. It is very hard to do, if someone keeps stealing all of the benefits and profits.

Amazing book - I have bought atleast 15 copies and have given them to friends. Opens up the corruption in African countries and is fascinating to follow the various cases now being challenged ongoing in law by different parties. Well researched and extremely readable. Let us know the next book!
