does this printer work on a macbook ?

If the colour runs out, can I use the printer with just the black cartridge?

No. This printer is the worst one I have ever used. Shoots out extra blank paper randomly, does not get a lot of prints from cartridges and you can expect to replace the entire printer multiple times per year. I have used about 4 of these and have never once had one last up to 6 months. Best advice is to get another a better printer or another brand.
